I recently had a problem with our Hotpoint HSS25GFTA. It was over defrosting and warming the freezer. I replaced both the defrost thermostat and the control board. This has not solved the problem. I have been messing around with the control codes accessed from the front panel by holding all four temperature adjustment buttons down for five seconds. I have figured out what some of them do but not all of them. I can execute some of the codes and observe the result but I can't seem to get it to behave as it should. I am looking for a source to identify the various test codes that are available from the front panel. Any other help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The evaporator fan is running constantly.  I can only get it to stop by turning the freezer off.  The underside of the fridge is clean.  The condensor fan is running smoothly.  It is building up ice on the coil.

There is a single defrost element at the bottom of the coil.  It is a tube approximately 9 inches long by 5/8 inches in diameter.  It has a resistance of 22 ohm.  It's kind of a mess, reminiscent of a burnt out light bulb...  I am not sure what it should look like.  I will replace it to be on the safe side.

Yes replace that and check out.the other possibility is
1)the timer is not working properly.either its slow or completely stopped/
2)or the compressor relay is faulty .this might be the cause that fan is running non stop.
you can get both the parts at
www.radioshack.com

this will help.
please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.
keep updated.thanks.

Hi,

**I was wondering if it was a problem to have it all the way against the back wall?**

http://www.applianceaid.com/images/frigpartsback.JPG

A refrigerator with a static condensor ( pictured above ) may have a problem with the unit pushed hard against the wall as this one needs some air flow around it to remove the heat.

http://www.applianceaid.com/images/frigpartsback2.JPG

Air over condensor ( pictured above ) has a flat back and has a fan to circulate air across the hot condensor coils under the refrigerator and this style can be pushed hard against the wall and the refrigerator will not be effected.
OR

Here is some things to check:

Is there a frost build up on the freezer back panel?

Can you hear the freezer fan(evaporator fan) running fast? Lots of air coming out of the freezer duct?

Take off the back access panel behind the refrigerator, make sure the condenser fan is turning fast, make sure its clean back in there. If its clogged then unplug the refrigerator, then clean back in there.

Also take off the front kick-plate(toe-plate) access grill on the bottom front and make sure the condenser is clean.
Thanks

I have a Hotpoint hss251fmd and the freezer and refrigerator are getting warm at the top. the bottom and the back are cold. The freezer Is cold but not freezing everything. There's alot of frost inside...

Sounds like defrost cycle has been altered. Look into back of freezer and see if a layer of frost is building. If yes then unplug and place items from freezer into an ice chest or another freezer. Remove the panel that showed the frost layer and defrost the evaporator coils with a hair drier Examine the WR51X10055 Defrost Heater and test if you cannot see burn marks HERE It does not hurt to also change the WR50X10068 Defrost Thermostat Instructions on replacing the defrost thermostat are also on the same page. Here is a=> Service Manual

My Hotpoint CSX203A side by side refrigerator is warm on refrigerator side, but freezer side is fine.

Let's begin by looking for the defrost timer in photo here=> CSX20BABCWH Fresh Food Section Controls The part number is=> WR9X489 Sounds like you are not getting defrost and this is the most likely reason. Turn the defrost timer clockwise slowly until compressor and fans stop. Allow to remain like this up to 30 minutes and open freezer door and then listen for sizzling or crackle noise. This will indicate the fridge is in defrost. If the timer does not restart the compressor after this time simply turn again slowly clockwise until it starts. If this works the timer needs replaced. You have two other parts the defrost heater and defrost thermostat to check if the above does not work. Then click here=> .CSX20BABCWH Freezer Section Components See the part location 230 is your=> WR51X442 Glass Tube Heater Then finally the defrost thermostat is part location 240 and part number=> WR50X122 Defrost Thermostat
Try the timer first and let me know how that comes out and I will go through replacing the defrost Heater and defrost thermostat once I know how the fist test works. If helpful please rat if not then please tell me what I can answer from here, Thank You Sea Breeze

I would replace the "Defrost termination thermostat" I recently repaired a single door

thermostat. (the termination thermostat was a plastic affair and had actually popped open). It now works fine Hope this helps.

Frost in freezer, fan in freezer sometimes changes speeds, low pitch or humming noise, manualy defrosted it 1 month ago seemed to be fine for two weeks, vegies freeze in drawer. hotpoint hss25gfta 5 yrs old

If the defrost thermostat is bad it will need to be replaced, otherwise you will have to continuously manually defrost the unit. The noise you hear is probably the fan hitting the ice. The defrost thermostat assists in melting that ice about every eight hours.

My Hotpoint Side-by-side temperature flucuates(model #HSS25GFTA). Items in freezer melt at times and then re-freeze. Same is noted for the fridge. Service tech added freon; however, problem continued. ...

You are correct on your evaluation of the " tech " the # 4 thermistor is bad . This tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp and when to cycle off due to selected temperature .

I have a hotpoint refrigerator with model number: HSS25GFTA BB. It's 3 years old, about 1 year ago the freezer seems to slightly melt and refreeze and keep cycling the same thing. To cause ice to build up...

You have a defrost problem. No biggie. Check your heaters first, then your t-stat and timer. After a year, you may need to repalce all three parts as after time, the ice takes out other parts if they are not changed right away. You will need to make sure the unit is completely thawed out before replacing parts for optimum use. Call or email us for the part that you need and we'll be sure to get them to you right away! Hope this solves all your problems.
