I have a Laserjet 5M that I use at work. It is giving me the following msg, "51 printer error, cycle power" What does that mean? I'm not able to use this printer. I get the above msg. or a page of just black toner filled paper. Thanks for any help.

ERROR 51 Control Panel Message : 51 PRINTER ERROR Description : Beam error Troubleshooting Steps : Laser/Scanner cable connectors are faulty or Laser/Scanner assembly is defective. The laser scanner is defefective which renders the unit uneconomical to repair. Newer Laserjet would cost less then repair cost on the 5M. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. 51 is a printer error.
51.2 is a laser error
51.2Y don't know. Can't find any errors that end in a "Y".

Be that as it may, press the check mark on the operator panel to continue.
Try power cycling the printer.

Could have a defective laser/scanner assembly or a bad DC Controller.

Sounds like you need to replace the scanner. Check the price for parts and labor. It may be cheaper to get another printer.

1.Control Panel
2.Add Hardware
3.Install the hardware in advanced mode
4.Printers
5.Chose printer port
6.In left panel chose HP and in right panel your model and I hope you will have success

Error message displayed

That is either a laser scanner error or a memory malfunction. If you hear noise from the laser when it starts to print, then the laser bearings are dry. You have to carefully remove the laser assembly and add a few drops of oil to the bearings, a new laser will be best.

DISPLAY READS: 80 SERVICE (01E4)

If you keep getting 80 service, first recycle the power to the printer (try a few times if the error doesn't go). If that doesn't work replace the MIO card (the bit the network cable goes in)
