BOLEN RIDING LAWN MOWER 13AN683G163 TRANSMATIC DRIVE. REPLACED BELTS AND THE MOWER RUN IN 7TH SPEED AND SLIP WEHN I TRIED TO PLACE IN LOWER SPEED

I have not found the problem, however there is not a tensioner and I rechecked the belts, twice. The routing of the belts is straight forward from the motor shaft to the viriable speed pulley. I have inspected the variable speed pully and the center sheeve floats freely and has no sign of wear. Maybe I didn't describe my problem thoroughly so I'll try again. Initially upon reassembly the mower belt are tight, and pulls off successfully in one of the high speed setting 6, 7 or 8. When I depressed the clutch and select lower speed 2,3 or 4 it begins the slipping. I have use diagrams for the Bolen model 13AN683G163 and every thing is assembled correctly.

Either the belt routing is incorrect or there is a tensioner which needs adjusting. Recheck your belt installation. Oh, it could be the wrong belt, too.

Okay. What was the problem if this didn't work?

  • Anonymous May 01, 2009

Well, it still sounds like a loose belt. The lower speeds are going to have smaller diameter drive pulleys (or whatever) and the belt is going to need more tension on it to make up for the smaller pulleys.

I'm not familiar with the details of this drive system. Do you have an internet link for the diagram you have so I could take a look?

It looks like it could be the linkage (loose/worn/maladjusted) from the shifter to variable speed pulley. I have never worked on this type drive, so I can't give you any specifics.

The link below looks like a site where you could ask a question of experts on this specific mower.

If you did not use the original manufacturer belts it will cause this as lawn mower belts are designed to slip when not under tension (so called graphite Belts) where other belts are designed not to slip even when some tension is lost.

Bolen 17HP riding mower tries to start with key in off position

It sounds like you have an ign. wire grounded or your ign switch has a short in it. Also remove the cover on your starter drive to be sure it has released.

I have a walk behind mower. The drive belt broke and I replaced it and now it wont pull itself. The wheels still spin if I lift it up but when I set it down it wont go anywhere

you must have a belt tensioner somewhere. Have a look near your belt pully or a idler pully that has an adjustment screw where you can tighten your belt to give grip. It appears the weight of the mower is causing the belt to slip hence it no moving because your belt /belts are slipping
