I have a Necchi . The stitches are fine unless I change to the two widest zig zag stitches. I can do the two smaller but if I set it to the wide ones it sews the pattern but randomly skips stitches.
Can anyone help???!!!
Thanks a ton!
Jenn

I just bought a used Necchi 575 FA the ZiG Zag pattern is one # off. It will not sew normal zig zag on one but sews the #2 pattern. 2 sews the 3 pattern. 3 sews the 4 pattern and so on. Is it something I can fix or need it serviced?I just bought a used Necchi 575 FA the ZiG Zag pattern is one # off. Unless your manually operated sewing machine has switches to realign your sewing machine needle to make zig zag stitching, as is demonstrated in this YouTube video (starting at around 6:30 minutes in the video): https://www.fearlessmakers.com/manual-sewing-machine-works/
you cannot. Note: The machine in the video is a Necchi brand sewing machine.
Without knowing the model number of your manually operated Singer sewing machine, I cannot try to find operating instructions for it to determine if your machine has zig zag stitching potential.
Yes, because a zig zag stitch is creating a wide stitch and the tension on the thread is going to pull the fabric within the seam together, you can't seam thin fabric with a wide zig zag. It will "tunnel together". If you are using this stitch to neaten a raw edge, then try using the serpentine or three step zig zag where the needle pierces the fabric 3 times in each leg of the zig zag, this will give better results.
When zig zagging over a raw edge, the tension on the thread will pull in the fabric, especially in lightweight cottons or even lighter organza. Its not the best edging method for very light weight fabrics. You can try using a smaller zig zag, loosening off the top tension a little bit. Or if your machine has it, use the triple zig zag or serpentine stitch, where the needle goes through the fabric three times to make up each zig stitch, this stitch is better for edging most fabrics and is my preferred stitch.
From the pattern selector (the bigger dial), select the zig-zag stitch. Then, using the stitch length dial (the smaller dial), adjust the stitch length. The closer your stitch length is to "0", the more dense will your zig-zag stitch be.

you start with the broad zig zag stitch bar across the top then you go down the left side using a smaller zig zag stitch then you make the the broad zig zag stitch at the bottom then you make the smaller zig zag stitch on the right side all the way to the top broad zig zag stitch & your done the right side zig zag does not go beyond the top broad zig zag stitch
since you bought the machine at a state sale it would probably be a good idea to have the machine serviced. you should be able to go from straight stitch to zig zag with out any problems. if you move the dials or knob & the machine will not do a straight stitch then it needs to be checked
make sure the pattern selector is set for straight stitch first. If it is set correct then the machine may be "stuck" is zigzag mode. May need to be de greased and then re lubricated.
Because it is almost a straight stitch but the needle continues to move in a zig zag fashion is reason to believe it is in a long stitch. By changing the number of stitches per inch there will be a very noticeable looking zig zag stitch.
