  1. Does it go back in and then pop back out as if you pressed the button, or is there something mechanically wrong that prevents you from pushing the drive in?
  2. Laptop batteries are notorious for losing capacity over time. Sometimes this can be due to the battery "memory" getting uncalibrated. Run the laptop on battery power until you drain it as far as it will go (save your work.) Then leave it off as you power it all the way to full charge. Turn the machine on without the power cord and once again run the battery all the way down. Several cycles of draining and charging the battery can help reset the battery. If it's just a dying battery then you may just need to get a replacement. Here are a few tips for reducing battery drain when on the go:

  • Decrease screen brightness: most laptops will have a function key (Fn+Up and Fn+Down are common keys, but find the ones with a sun icon on them) that will let you darken the screen. This will improve the battery life as less power is required for your backlight.
  • Defragment your Hard Drive: if you defrag your drive then the "arm" in it will have less distance to travel between sectors on the disk, thus saving some battery.
  • Use Power Profiles: in Control Panel you can change your laptop's power settings. If you set the profile to Portable or Max Battery most laptop motherboard's will actually under-clock the processor which will reduce the power-drain and the heat. Lower heat is explained below:
  • Improve Heat Dispersion: the hotter your laptop gets the harder the fans need to spin to compensate and disperse the heat. Keeping your laptop dust free and with unobstructed air in/out vents will save a lot of battery. Use a small pin to keep your fan from spinning (or else you will wear out the ball bearing) and shoot small bursts of compressed air into the in and out air vents. If you haven't done it in a while (or ever) then dust will probably go everywhere, so do it outside or in a well-ventilated area.
  • Remove Disks: the less time your computer is physically moving something the better. Windows will sometimes spin up a disk and scan its contents, so if there is no disk you avoid this power-draining "feature"

I have an Acer Aspire One and when I plug the charger in I have to spin it or wiggle it or both to get the battery to charge. Once I have it in position it generally stays on charge, but if the cable is...

It could be either one Sarah.

The AC adapter's (Charger) cable, or the DC Power Jack where the AC adapter plugs into the laptop.

This is an example of the DC Power Jack not installed,

http://www.laptopjacks.com/view_part/Acer-Aspire-ONE-AOA150-ZG5-DC-Power-Jack-AC351816.html

(You can click on the three views of the jack to enlarge)

1) Check the DC Power Jack to see if it's in good repair.

Battery removed use a small flat tipped screwdriver, and Gently see if you can move the Center Pin around in the jack.
See if the Center Pin will move side to side a small amount. There is supposed to be No perceptible movement.

Referring back to the closeup photos of the DC Power Jack, the flat blade-like prongs are upside down, in relation to how the jack sits on the motherboard.

The flat prongs go down through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard.
If the center pin of the jack is stationary, but the jack as a unit moves around, one or more solder joints, (Connections) for the flat prongs may be cracked.

The repair consists of completely disassembling the laptop, removing the broken DC Power Jack, and installing a new one.

Acer Aspire One service manual,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-acer

(Click on the blue - One - in Aspire One.
This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name (One) it may take up to 30 seconds before you see the first page.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.

(Took 12 seconds just now for full download)

No perceptible movement of the DC Power Jack? Suspect the cable of the AC adapter right near it's plug. (Plug that plugs into the DC Power Jack)

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

My LG R400 laptop has a bad charging port.how do i repair it

DC Jack diagnosis:
1. Test power adapter for output voltage. Bend the power cable in various directions while doing this to be sure that there is no broken conductors in the cable.
2. If power adapter is Ok, connect it & see if the power LED on the laptop will glow when you jiggle the power connector in various directions. If yes, then the DC jack might be loose or damaged, & need to be either re-soldered or replaced.
3. If not, then disassemble the laptop. Remove any components that attach to the laptop's motherboard first (e.g. battery, hard drive, RAM, wireless card, optical drive, ... etc.)
4. Next, remove the keyboard & the LCD screen.
5. Finally, unscrew all screws that hold the upper cover & lower cover together so that you could gain access to the motherboard.
6. Inspect the solder points connecting the DC jack to the motherboard. Make sure that none of them is loose. If any, re-solder them.
7. Inspect the center pin in the DC jack. Make sure that it is not broken or loose. If it is, then you might need to replace the DC jack.
8. When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.

I need a mainboard for a LGM1G22A - the part number is 6871BC330AA. Does anyone know who might have a second hand one?

ACTUALLY you DID!! (Moment of silence, as so-called Expert is silently dying in the background from embarrassment!)

Is this an LG Express Dual?
If I may ask, why do you need another mainboard?

1.DC Power Jack is bad?
2.Motherboard area on motherboard for DC Power Jack, has cracked away from the main body of the motherboard?
3.Sensor circuit for battery/AC adapter is bad?

Broken power port (dc jack)

Whenever I replace dc jacks, MAJORITY of the time the entire computer needs to be taken apart down to the motherboard.

Usually I just remove every screw that I see and then carefully start to pry pieces off the laptop. Don't force anything though, everything should come apart with minimal effort, as long as the screws are out.

If you're going to attempt this repair yourself you're gonna need to set aside about two hours to complete it.

You'll need:

a soldering gun
solder
solder wick

Make sure you have a big, flat, clean workspace to work on.

If you have a camera it might help to take pictures along the way. At the very least keep track of where the screws go.

I usually separate them into two categories: outside the laptop and inside the laptop.

It's not the easiest thing to repair for the home user but you can do it if you've got the patience.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck!

Hope this info helps.
