First make sure you loosened the pinch bolts on the lower triple tree. I usually take a small cold chisel and insert it into the split where the pinch bolt is and tap it into the split lightly with a small hammer to spread it and open the hole just a bit. I also spray a bit of penetrating oil on the fork tube above the lower tree to lubricate the tube and help is slide out of the lower tree.

hit outer edged of tire from outside while rotating wheel if possible
if all lugs are off it will come free sometimes needs persuasion
Sounds like the subs are blown with the voicecoils fused together which means the amp is/was seeing a dead short ( zero Ohms reisitence) not good for any amp. Disconnect the speaker terminals from the amp and see if it turns on. The funny smell might have been the subs blowing up, i'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
