SOURCE: misplaced rompaq diskette

You probably need to change the boot order in the bios to make the computer boot from the cd rom before any local hard drives.

F2 is usually used to access the BIOS, you have to press it immeadiately upon seeing the first screen, which usually displays the name of the manufacturer, and from there you have to find the section to change the boot order.

Getting the following error on boot up right after the ibm splash screen: ERROR Resource conflict - PCI Serial Bus Controller in slot 7 Bus:15, Device::00, Function:01

If it is not making it to Windows at all...Generally occurs when two devices are using the same IRQ or memory allocation. This can sometimes be set in BIOS depending on the manufacturer etc. I would start by going in BIOS and restoring the default settings. There should be a menu item in BIOS usually something like "Restore Default".
If it is making it to windows then you probably just have a missing or corrupt driver. Generally this would fall under a chipset driver which can be downloaded for free from hp's site. You can also download and run Everest or SIW to properly id the device in question.

Comment back with for findings results or for more assistance.

I installed a rompaq update on the laptop and it stopped working. what do i do? the laptop is so dear to me. pls help.

Hello,

if the laptop was working perfectly before you installed the rompaq update, then it means the rompaq is the cause of the problem.

You need to perform a system restore in order to undo the installed rompaq.

Run your system in safe mode and perform the system restore.

To run system in safe mode, Turn on the computer and immediately, start pressing F8 constantly till a windows booting option shows up. Use the arrow key on your keyboard to select safe mode and press enter, then wait for the windows to load completely.

After the computer and successfully booted in safe mode, go to:

Start > All programs > Accessories > System tools > System restore.

Read and follow instructions. System will restart during the restore process.....

After that try again and observe of your laptop will function/work properly/normally.

Please let me know if this doesn't solve your problem so that I can help you further.

Regards.

Which key do i hold down when reinstalong os

The PC-Restore Image can be accessed by pressing CTRL+F11 immediately after the Dell Splash screen (At the screen with a blue bar with www.dell.com in white letters across the top of the screen) this will initiate PC-Restore by Symantec and allow you to re-image the system to out of box condition (ALL DATA on SYSTEM WILL BE LOST)
If the restore image is not available or errors out, then you will need to re-install OS from the Windows CD that came with the system.

0xd000001e and subsequent black screen

The easiest way is to hit F10 right after the Acer splash screen. This will take you into recovery mode on the laptop. Then just do the Reset to Factory Default. This will put everything back to the way it was when you purchase the laptop. It does this from the recovery partition.

CDRom is not present in Vista 32 - Shows driver not working...

Check "Computer" or My Computer and see if the drive is there. If not, reboot the system and go to the System Setup page (hit F2 on the Dell splash screen). Check if the CDROM drive is present under Drive Configuration. If not, reseat the CDROM drive. Remove it from the computer and just put it back in. If you think this is a software issue, backup all your files to a USB flash drive and do an image restore. Hit F8 several times continuously when you see the Dell Splash Screen then select Repair Your Computer. Login on the System Recovery Page. Choose Dell Factory Image Restore. This will bring your computer back to where it started.
