HELP! Its freaking me out, every time i turn on my archos i ge a screen that says "Recovery (code 2), system is damaged. Would you like to recover it ? the there are options No, Repair and Format Disk." selecting any of them does nothing, i really need help!

Thats so Gay, Why would they post recovery options if they don't even work.

I had the same problem. However although my pc didn't automatically recognise the archos device when connected it did show when explorer was opened. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Archos website and dragged into the root directory of Archos. The device then picked this up and everything was fine. Previously I had tried repair and format. Obviously all the demo video and photos etc are wiped.

The first solution is no good as the system does not start up to give access to the Archos from the PC. In any case I already had the
latest firmware installed.

The HDD light does not flash at all and normally this does so when powering up the Archos. I suspect the hard disk has died but it seems amazing that this error code problem has suddenly appeared for a number of people within a couple of weeks or so of each other. I have not dropped my Archos - it was working perfectly
yesterday.

The Archos site tells you how to deal with the problem - you need to download to your computer the laterst version of firmware (operating system), copy that to the root drive of your archos, leave it connected and ehn update the firmware. Worked for me - but I did lose everything on the drive

hey, did you sort this out? If so, how?cause I have the exact same problem...If I manage to be fast enough to press the button to "recover" or "format" before the screen freezes then it just goes into recovery for ages but accomplishes nothing. Sounds like the hdd has dislodged due to the knock...open it up pull off the hard drive...reconnect it..or reseat the connection..and try again...if that doesn't work...you could try removing the drive to run a chkdsk facility using Linux on a pc...or source another hdd off eBay with the correct file system and drivers...for that model.

Recovery (code 104)
From Archos' support website FAQ:

When I switch on my Archos device, the following message is displayed: "Would you like to recover your system?" What does it mean and what should I do?

You are on the recovery mode screen. It means that your hard drive has been damaged and must be repaired or formatted.
With this system recovery mode, you will have to select between "Repair Disk" and "Format Disk".
Start by selecting "Repair Disk" and follow the instructions displayed on the screen. See the full PDF manual (available on the Archos web site) on how to use the Repair and Format options.

If repairing the disk did not work, try formatting the disk by selecting "Format Disk". Note that the formatting will erase all data.

If you still cannot restart your Archos after trying a system recovery, you should contact Archos technical support.

Archos 400 won't turn on (error code 3)
I hard tried the same thing to transfer a 6.7GB file to another computer.I had formated the drive as an NTFS drive. when i turned archos back on, it failed to turn on give me error code. but for some reason it asked me to do a recovery. I remember i had seen some recovery files in my archos device saved (zipped file packages). And when it was doing the recovery i noticed it was reading the zipped files for recovery purpose. After the recovery, i did not see the files anymore in the device. So if i do the same thing again (format as ntfs) i might not be able to recover it back again.

My archos 605 won't do anything but to show recovery code 102.
recovery code 102 screen - this error message means the the hard disk has failed - I am guessing that the unit has been dropped at some point - Sorry but it back to Archos - The UK number is 0207 949 0115

Archos 404 could not start
it sounds like the partition that hold the recovery files has got damaged,i suggest you talk to the manufacturer or supplier on how to overcome this problem,if it was a pc i would say format hard drive & re-install the software but its not .

have you tried resetting the machine on the bottom their is a tiny hole put a reasonable sized safety pin through that you use for a babys nappy.I found this reset my archos!!!!

open the battery pack, and push the hard drive back into it's slot.

it has prongs that attach, tat was always my problem.
