I use my MD5000 to print simple logos on decal paper. It prints OK in black or white, but any color printing is incomplete. It's as if the color(s) have ran out, but it prints the same specific incomplete areas on each logo.

Replace the cartridge if it has the printhead attached or if not take a straw and puddle the cap where the printer parks the head and turn it off let it soak 1/2 a day then turn on & off 2 or 3 times

SOURCE: Alps md 1300 only prints in black

First of all, Alps MD inks do not "Dry up". They are dry to start with!

It sounds like you may be running XP, with the Microsoft driver for this printer installed. You need to load the Alps driver, which you can get by joining the alps or alpsdecal group at http://groups.yahoo.com. You can find the driver in the files section of one of the groups.

SOURCE: lines in the printing

Join the Yahoo Group for Alps printers. There is a lot of information there. Have you cleaned the print head? Refer to the Users Guide for how to do it. Lines in the printer output can indicate a bad printer head.

SOURCE: My alps md 5000 doesnt seem to be printing decals as clear as it

Try cleaning the print head as described in the user guide. The printers can be touchy, but if you want to print white, foils, or metallic inks, there is very little else out there. To get the most out of the printer, you need to be a sophisticated user. It's not for the faint of heart.

Can you print just in black ink

Yes, you can do black-only printing. However, your printer may need the color cartridge present in the carrier to continue to function.
With your document open, click File -> Print. In the Print dialog box, click Properties, Preferences, Options, or Setup. In Paper Options, select Print in black and white and click OK. Click Ok again to print your document.

Printer full of ink, but will pring pages either blank of with smeared ink.

Follow these steps to check the print settings for your print job.
  1. In the software program you are trying to print from, click File and then click Print . The Print dialog box opens.
  2. Select your product, and then click Properties . The printer Properties dialog box opens.
  3. Click the Printing shortcuts tab.
  4. Under Printing shortcuts , click the type of job you are trying to print.
  5. Review the following options, and then make any necessary changes.
    • Paper size : Make sure that the selected option matches your paper size.
    • Paper type : If one of the options matches your paper type exactly, select that option.
    • Print quality : If you are not satisfied with your printed page quality, or want more densely printed prints, increase the print quality. To print more quickly, or for lighter prints, decrease the print quality.
  6. Click the Features tab.
  7. Check the Print in Grayscale setting
    • If you are trying to print in color, select Color Options , and then make sure that Print in Grayscale is not selected.
    • If you are printing a black and white image, select Print in Grayscale to fix streaking in black areas.
  8. Click OK , and then click OK again to start the print job.
Make sure the printer is loaded with unused white paper.
Open HP Solution Center , then click Settings , then Printer Toolbox .
Select the Services tab.
Click Print PQ (print quality) Diagnostic Page .

Make sure the printer is loaded with unused white paper.
Open HP Solution Center , then click Settings , then Printer Toolbox .
Select the Services tab, then click A- Click Align Printheads or
B- Click Clean Printheads .
C- Click Calibrate Linefeed .

If, after repeated printhead cleaning, the Print Quality Diagnostic page shows white lines across the color blocks in Test Pattern 2 (but no white lines in the gray blocks in Test Pattern 3), one or both of the printheads will have to be replaced. The Print Quality Diagnostic page shows which printhead should be replaced.

Black and white prints are not black

Sorry, steve, that you are experiencing this problem.

According to canon.com's website regarding the i9900 InkJet Photo Printer:

Why color ink may be used when printing in black and white Even when printing in black and white, color ink is used for the following reasons:
  1. Automatic cleaning of the print head.

To prevent the print head nozzles from clogging, the print head is automatically cleaned periodically. At that time, a small amount of each color ink is consumed.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink is also consumed.

  2. Color inks may be used to create black.

When printing in grayscale or on photo paper or when duplex printing, although printing appears in black and white, the color black may be created using the three (cyan, magenta, and yellow) color inks. Printers without a pigment black tank / cartridge will print black / grayscale will create a composite black using color ink even on plain paper.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink may be consumed.
  3. In order to keep the heavy black ink from smearing on the page or in the printer, color ink is used when duplex printing to help create black text.

    ---
I might suggest taking out the color ink cartridges leaving only black there, but some printers don't take kindly to this. So, you may have to further experiment with magenta, cyan, and yellow to make it at least seem b&w to your best eye's judgment.

Good luck on this.

Won't print black when set for plain paper

Try removing all ink bins except black then you won't have any problems. You should also be able to go into your printer settings and select "Black and White" or "No Color" and it will print ok. Removing the ink trays is the easiest way though.

HP 5610 Will not print Color documents, only Black and White

Chances are that your print driver is set to print in black and white while the copier side is automatically detecting that your original is in color. To have the printer print in color: Select file print, select your printer and hit preferences. Select the Paper/Quality tab and switch from Black and White to Color.
