Is the oil level good, does the low-oil cutoff switch work properly? Try bypassing the aforementioned switch to see if it fixes your woe.

SOURCE: kohler 12kw generator starts but shuts down after 3sec

Your gas pressure is too low and you may not have a large enough supply pipe. You need at least 10 inches of water column with the engine running to operate an LP vapor fueled engine. Because the engine is starving for fuel, its governor opens the throttle to WOT (so it goes to high revs) but there isn't any fuel to make horsepower with so the output voltage falls and the undervoltage alarm trips.

SOURCE: auto idle on a reddy rgh11000 ie will not idle down

This sounds like the idle control solenoid has become misadjusted. To check that this is the case, locate the throttle lever and follow it back towards the governor arm until you find the solenoid. Start the generator and switch on the idle control while watching the governor arm where it passes near the solenoid, if the arm snaps back and forth you probably have a bad adjustment. To readjust the solenoid loosen the jam nut on the core of the solenoid just enough that you can turn the core by the square bit on the end. Adjust the core 1/4 turn or so at a time until the governor arm stays in position when the idle control is on, then turn idle control off and make sure that the governor arm goes back to the full throttle position. You may have to fiddle with the adjustment a little until you find the right spot. Tighten the jam nut back down and you're good to go.

SOURCE: My troy-Bilt 5550 watt generator will not start

First drain the fuel bowl. Any old fuel in there will keep it from starting. Fuel stabilizer is not what it's it cracked up to be. I've worked for 6yrs at a rental yard and had no luck with any fuel stabilizer, the fuel still went bad. If after you drain the fuel bowl it still will not start, you will need to clean the carb. Remove the carb and spray carb cleaner through all the accessible passages. If this does not do it, you will need to replace the carb. For long term storage I highly recommend draining all the fuel and filling just the carb with fuel stabilizer to keep gaskets moist. Then drain the carb when you take it out of storage.

SOURCE: VALSI 5,500 WATT GENERATOR WILL NOT START

All generators need to be run once a month. All things from the tank to the and including the carb will get gummed up with dried out fuel. I have a whole house generator and a 5500 watt gen set on my motor home. I keep fresh fuel in the stand alone house generator in California in case of a bad earthquake. I drain the gas after every run and keep all vehicles full of fuel just in case. Run gen sets at least once a month or pay pay pay!!

SOURCE: My 5250 watt Power Back generator will not start,

Have you check the engine oil level? If it is down on oil you won't get spark because of the oil level switch shutting the ignition down to protect it's self.

I Have a Rural King Generator it starts Fine but only runs a few minutes and it shuts off

Make sure the gas is fresh. Also, take off the carb bowl and look for signs of gumming. If there is gooey stuff in the bowl, then the carb needs to be cleaned.

It won't start. I put in fresh fuel, carb is good get's air & fuel but will not start. what could this be?

Three main things are needed for all small engines to run: Compression, spark, and fuel. I would purchase a compression tester and a spark tester from a local auto parts store. Both are reasonably priced and easy to use. Compression tester screws into spark plug threads, then you simply pull starter rope a few times until needle on gauge stops rising and observe reading. You should have at least 60 psi and should hold awhile. Next, screw in spark plug and hook up spark tester inline, pull handle and observe spark tester. Next, check for obstructions in fuel lines to carb. These simple steps will lead you in the right direction instead of guessing. Good luck. Keep me posted with results and I can help you further.

I bought a champion generator 2 yrs ago.It ran when I bought it. Have not occasion to use it until now. It will not fire. It had some rust on the flywheel. Removed the rust. I replaced the spark plug.

Probably only one of these issues to cause that. gas not turned on or flooded- ck spark plug to see if it is wet, check to see if the spark plug is getting power by taking it out leaving the wire on it and holding it about a 1/8 of a inch away from some exposed metal part of the frame and have someone try to start it. if you get a spark then ck your gap and put it back. Ck your choke too to see if it is on. also if it was flooded then leave the choke off and keep trying to start it. if it was stored outside, it may have water in the gas.

Champion 3500 watt generator shuts down after 1 min. Not low on oil!

You have a carburetor problem. Stuck float or clogged filter. Gas cannot get into the carb as fast as it is used. Letting it sit for a few minutes will allow the bowl to fill.

Coleman Powermate 10 HP Generator shuts down after a few minutes.

I have an HM100 on a 5500 watt gen with the same problem. This motor calls for a J17 spark plug, but I found using a J19 (hotter) plug solved the problem. I think the J17 doesn't get hot enough for a complete combustion burn so it act like fuel starvation thus resulting in the black sooty and wet plug.

Honda GX160 runs fine for 5 minutes then dies like out of fuel.

I would look for the fuel filter. Blow it our. I know you have a new tank of gas, but you might want to empty it out and make sure the clean and put in new. Even with Stabil in the gas you might just have to much condensation in the tank
