Air filter fills up with gas and stalls the mower.

I have a 99 Murray Twin 2 17.5 hp riding mower. I start the mower it runs for about 2 secons then shuts off. I removed the air filter and gas shutes out of the 2 holes by the choke. If I wait a couple of hours for the gas to dry up the mower will start and then shut off again filling the air filter up with gas.

Your carburetor needs cleaned. It is dirty/has debris in it. If it has a bowl that is. If it has a diaphram (carburetor mounted on the fuel tank), replace the diaphram. They go bad.

I hope this helps get you going.

Yes, go to most any autoparts store and get a bottle of a fuel additive called seafoam. Follow the directions. As the newly treated fuel goes through the enging it will clean it, removing any debris which is now causing yout engine to lope and die. J.

Difficulty starting mower. stalls several times before running smoothly. previous owner stated it had been stored for one season. tank had some gas when purchased. it's a Murray model 309008x99a. thanks!!!

I would drain the gas out, take the fuel bowl off because this bowl hold gas and the gas may be old which built up slimy old gas. While you have the bowl off cleaning it, replace the float and needle. Cost about $5. Re-install and fill with gas.
