I have an Antec external hard drive. Earlier today it was working fine but now it won't run at all. The light on the plug-in is green but there's no "whirring" sound like it usually has and the computer (laptop AND desktop) won't show it as an available device. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The fact that it is not working on two machines suggests it may have become faulty. If the lead between machines is a separate one (usb to drive connection) try using another one to make the connection. Leads do not last forever either.

SOURCE: Mac Ibook Power supply problem

On Mac iBooks the orange light comes on when it charges the battery. Once the battery is charged it turns green. Im guessing the other powersupply was aftermarket or broken. EIther way, if it starts out green - recognizes the battery isnt full - turns orange for a while - then turns green when the battery is full, then the computer and powersupply are working perfectly. Enjoy your iBook!

Actually, there is nothing you can do with the hard drive. If its shorting out the power supply when its pugged in then it is defective. However, most hard drives carry a 3 year warranty from the manufacture. If the drive is younger then 3 years old, I would call the manufacture and get it repaired or replace. Hope this helps . . .

SOURCE: My WD external 500G hard

Replace your PSU then test all leads that are attached to your hard drive sounds like a faulty lead of some sorts then
try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty because a computer has to have an end to the circuit any fulty leads will lead to no boot up
good luck

Sounds like driver problem to me. Re install the driver by using installation disc, or if you have lost your CD, than use this Driver Update Software to update. I hope this helped.

Seagate Expansion 1TB external Desktop Hard Drive (9sf2A4-500) not detected.

Claire,

Have you tried connecting the drive to another computer using Windows 7 or later. You could try chkdisk /f at a command prompt or get the testdisk app to identify deeper issues with the drive.

External hard drive wont stay connected to computer

This depends where the failure is.

If your controller board for the external casing or your power supply have failed the drive can be removed from the casing and placed in a new one($30-$40), then it should work fine. If the circuit board on the hard drive or an internal circuit for the drive has failed then you may require the help of a pro.

My external hard drive won't turn on

Ok, this just happened to me, my western digital my book studio external drive was not booting up, i could hear the disk spinning, but it would then cut out and the light on the drive was never turning on. i called Western Digital customer support and found out that the proper way to connect a drive is to plug in the power cable FIRST then the data cable. Also, with the My Book Studio Edition you should never have to press the power button, the drive just turns on when you plug it in. Hope this helps somebody...

External Hard Drive problem - Why God!? Why!!?

sure..the power is not the key issue..what you might consider, is calling a local computer fix it shop, and ask how much to recover that data..then, you may be well advised to consider an online back utility, such as you can find here.
