Popping noise and red light

I was cooking on the cooktop and I heard a popping noise and a red light flash. The circuit breaker shut off. I reset the circuit breaker, cut the cooktop on and the same noise and red light event occurred. I reset the circuit breaker again and I'm afraid to cut the cooktop on. Also, the cooktop indicator is illuminated, yet the cooktop knobs are all set to off and there's no heat coming from any of the four cooking zones. I saw a similar post with a different model and the diagnosis was a bad switch. Could this be the case for this model as well?

I have the same problem today and was wondering if you ever solved the mystery of the light coming on? Mine popped recently, the breaker shut off, I reset it, and the light was on. Additionally, however, the burner with the light is not working.

I have a GE 36" Profile Gas Cooktop JGP963 and when i light one of the burners, it trips the GFCI , main breaker and a little fire ball comes from under the knob. what could cause this?

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A SHORT IN THE IGNITER. YOUR COOKTOP SHOULD BE ON A DEDICATED CIRCUIT AND NOT A GFCI. YOU MIGHT HAVE TWO CIRCUITS TIED INTO THE SAME RUN. POPPING THE GFCI AND THE MAIN BREAKER IS SUSPECT. THE GFCI SHOULD SHUT DOWN THE CIRCUIT WITHOUT POPPING THE MAIN. THIS IS PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT BY AND ELECTRITION.

The left side of my cooktop shorted out. Initially popping sound and electrical burning smell. Now shorted out with loud popping sounds and large flash of red under the cooktop. Did not start a fire but...

What you had was a slow short - practically the same thing as in a welder: big and loud flame, localized and the amperage isn't that great. As such it's very possible that the breaker wasn't tripped, especially if you had a big one, over 30Amps.
No, you shouldn't even try to repair it, that unit is dead as a dodo.

Breaker in panel tripped and won't turn back on

You may have a short circuit to ground fault in the electric cook top. Divide and conquer. Unplug the cook top and try to reset the breaker. If the breaker resets, then you have a problem with the electric cook top. If it doesn’t, then the problem is at the electrical panel side. Either problem will require a qualified technician’s assistance. I hope this helps. Good luck.

The circuit breaker for out kitchenaid glass

Water probably did get into the switch(es). The best bet for a fast fix is to pull the knobs off and use an air can (like for blowing dust out electronics) to blow down into the holes. This will dry out any water in there and should allow you to use it again. To be extra sure, blow out the switches and leave the knobs off over night. In the morning the knobs can be replaced and the cook top should be good to use. Hope this helps!

Cook top "popping" noise

make sure the heater elements are properly nested into their respective electrical sockets. if they get loose, then the electrical contact can be intermittent and arc/spark a bit..

Loud Pop, blown Breaker

Pull the unit away from the wall and inspect from rear. However, if all is fine, perhaps you simply overloaded the circuit that once. Were you running any other appliances (overhead microwave) at the same time?
