Question edited for clarity and spelling, 'hillux' to 'Hilux'..
Question moved to model category.
The Engine Check Light only comes on to tell you there is an issue. Then you connect a Code Reader to the OBD Port and look at the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The Code is a number and tells you the issue, and from there you can Google the Fix.
If the light comes on and goes off, the fault is transient. The ECM checks data multiple times a second, it can flag an issue and then clear it. The only way to find the code is to have a scanner connected as you drive, and read the Code when it appears.
They can tell how long it has been since the codes were cleared,so you won't get away with it.If it is a code that will stay off for a day,by the least expensive or most likely part that will fix the code, and show the receipt to the emission test station.(Who knows, you might even get lucky and actually fix the issue).
The Check Engine light is most likely an emissions issue, not necessarily a malfunction that will disable the car.
Go to Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, or other retail auto parts store and have them read the OBD codes for you. They will tell the story.
Good luck !
By the way, fix the easiest / cheapest codes to clear first, if there is more than one error code displayed - often the additional codes will clear up too.
The code clearing happens via two things> first, resolve the issue causing the error code. The code will come back if you do not resolve the issue. you can clear the codes by using a code reader, but it woudl likely reappear. Fix the issue causing the error code.
Remember, the code is a clue, not always the issue.
Fix the issue of why it kicking the code. Dont just erase it otherwise your not fixing anything. When you clear the code it erases the info in the pcm so it acts like nothing is wrong until you drive it around a bit and the vehicle re-detects the issue. If you want tell me the code and I will tell you how to fix it.
