You need to connect the "Audio/Digital Audio Out" of the TV or Cable box to the "Audio Input" of your home theater receiver.

How do I hook up my HDMI Blu ray player to my theater system that doesnt have HDMI

You have a few options depending on the entire system.

Do you have the TV audio output connected to the home theater system? In that case, connect the Blu-ray player to an HDMI input on the TV. Then leave the home theater system set to the TV input, while the TV is set to the HDMI input for the Blu-ray player. This is the simplest method.

You could use an audio extractor/converter. Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/J-Tech-Digital-Premium-Extractor-Converter/dp/B00BIQER0E . This will let you send the video signal to the TV (with a second HDMI cable) and have digital or analog audio sent to the home theater system.

If the TV doesn't have an available HDMI port and the home theater system only has analog audio inputs, you could use an HDMI to component video converter. You'd use something like this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/770115-REG/KanexPro_HDRGBRL_HDMI_to_Component_Converter.html . (Do not use an HDMI to component cable. Those only work with some projectors.)

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with more details about your TV and audio system for more specific information.

I have a samsung tv and blu-ray system each time i turn it on blu-ray reverts to din so i have to manually put it to hdmi 2 which i watch tv through i have digital optical cable conncted between blu-ray...

Hi, When you connect the HDMI you do not need to connect RCA cable as well. Do not connect 3 all together. HDMI,RCA and DOC. Check manual for proper connections. You can damage your systems. Please read MANUAL.

I have a LG LHB335 Blu-Ray home theater system, & a LG TV I can get Full surround sound when the blu-ray is play a DVD but not when just watching Reg TV. I use a HDMI, should I hook up sonething else ?...

LG documentation states:

When you use SIMPLINK function, you have to

connect to the OPTICAL IN 1 jack to enjoy TV
sound to your speaker system.

Basically you need to have the Audio go from TV to receiver and setup receiver to that Input to output surround sound to all speakers.

If you have a cable box or satellite receiver, hook that output into the receivers input and that should work.

My setup is DirectTv HDMI output goes into the LG Home Theater HDMI Input 1, and LG goes HDMI output into the TV HDMI input 1.
so to watch DirectTV, I switch LG Home theater to HDMI Input 1. and TV is on HDMI input 1 (to view LG HDMI output from DriectTV, Blu-Ray, Vudu, etc.)

I have bouight a samsung home theatre system that comes complete wiht a DVd player - i also have a samsung blu ray player - naturally ithought they would be compatible!! how wrong i was!! the connections...

You have several ways to do this. You can hdmi cables from the two units and plug them into your tv if it supports hdmi and run the audio out portion on the back of the tv and hook that into one of the audion inputs on the surround unit. Or you run audio directly out of the bluray using rca, digital coax, or digital optical cable. Turn the surround reciever to the corresponding input that you choose to use.
