well u need to download the sound driver, go to compaq website and select support then download, choose ur pc model and choose ur operating system, then go to sound driver, download it and run it, you will be fine, here is the webpage: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

You mentioned the mother board, but not the computer number. However, I'll send you to the site that you can download the chipset drivers for that board, You will need to choose the Compaq machine that you have. HERE.
