SOURCE: Empire Wall Heater(propane) won't stay lit

John Mac here...the solution was that we had shut the pilot off for the summer, and birds had made a nest inside the heat exchanger...coming in through the direct vent. Cleaned out the nest, and it works perfectly. My technician recommends that I leave the pilot buring through the summer to prevent this in the future.

SOURCE: B vent configuration of direct vent propane heaters

Yes, the design of the combustion chamber is limited at how much fresh air and combustion air can enter it. If you lengthen the venting, you will be causing more restriction and there will not be enough natural air movement to make it work. It will start, run for a minute or two and poof out. Not to mention you will be circumventing it's UL rating and if you sell your home with it installed, you are liable for any fatality or damage. Do you want to risk that? Don't even think of doing it! There are "Box" heaters out there sized from about 5,000 Btu's on up to 100,000 Btu's. Check the web.

Furnace lights right up, but will not shut off with on-off switch or thermastat switch? checked out the thermastat switch and that works fine.

Disconnect the thermostat wires from the gas valve, if unit still runs; you have a short in the gas valve and it needs to be replaced.

Heats fine when gets up to temp gos down to pilet will not lite back up tell i tap the valve

you could have a dirty pilot. these run on 750 mv. it takes around 200 to run the main burner. check to see if the pilot is sharp and blue or lazy and yellow. loose or dirty connection on the wiring will also cauce this problem.

My dv-215 direct vent propane unit thermostat is no working right. The burner will not lite until I push down on the mechanism inside the thermostat the burner will shut off when I move the mechanism to...

You need to replace the thermostat if you have to force the contacts to close.

Make sure you get the right type of stat. It appears this is a thermopile millivolt type, as opposed to a standard thermocouple. The stats are not interchangeable.
I noted stats were available at Sears, but there I am sure there are other sources to purchase from.

EMPIRE MDL 215 VENTID NOT HOT ENOUGH

Sal,
the gas pressure test should be done. Propane should have an outlet(heater side of the regulator)of 7 inches of water column. the inlet side has to be higher than that to supply it the proper pressure. Also the heater should have been converted to LP with proper orfices and springs

Empire DV-215 Low Flame Issue

Either a restriction in the gas train, low gas pressure or a bad gas valve. Check the pressure on the gas line when on pilot and again when the burners are running. Depending upon what type of gas it runs on, you should have at least 4" W.C. if Natural Gas and 10" W.C. if Propane. If gas pressures test good and all valves are open, you are looking at replacing the gas valve.
