I dropped my camera and the lens won't open or close now and the screen says Error, Restart Camera. How do I restart? I've tried turning it on and off and gently pressing on the lens, taking out the battery and none of those things work.

I think some grit got into my lens mechanism and the lens is stuck in it's out position. The screen displays "lens error, restart camera" when i attempt to turn it on.

i dropped my camera last week and i've been trying to pull the lens in and out to reset it but it still won't work. i still have the same error message, "lens error, restart camera," and a terrible clicking noise accompanies the message when i turn the camera on or off.

I don't know what happened to my camera; i believe it fell while open. Now it won't open, and when I power it on, it says "Lens Error. Please restart camera." I don't know what to do! Do i get a new camera?

This was someone else's description, but it is the same exact thing that happened to me. Will you please call or email me for what to do because I didn't see a solution for this problem.

I had the same problem, tried different things but this is what worked.

I put the camera flat on its "back" (screen down, lens up). Looking down at the lens I could see that it was slightly off center. I pushed the lens towards the center and down, forcing it to close. Once it was centered I was able to turn it on and off no problem.

My sister dropped my camera at the beach, it was dry sand so most of it came off. I got home and tried to clean it and then turned it on. The lenses came out but when i tried to retract it, it became stuck and said " Lens error, restart camera" i tried taking it apart and cleaning it with canned air (couldn't get to the lens area) but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi my sd 630 read lens error whenever i tried to turn it on. The lens would come out, read lens error, then the camera would shut off. The lens would retract when turned back on in view mode. So I turned the camera on just now and kind of pushed down on the lens as it opened(pushed opposite the direction that the lens elongates towards). The lens clicked twice and it came out fully. My camera is working fine now.

We had the same problem after my wife accidently dropped ours. I disassembled and reasembled our camera, after assuming that the lens was not recognizing that it was closed, hence the error. I can try to fix your camera for $50 and you pay all shipping charges.

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2008

I SUCCESSFULLY FIXED OUR CANON "Lens Error, Reset Camera". After being dropped on concrete accidently the camera was stuck in the open possiton and made a horrible noise when turning on. After disassembling and reassembling and getting the camera to recognize that the lens was closed it works like new again. It is pain staking but obviously worth it. I'd be glad to answer any questions.

I dropped my IXUS 65 on tarmac, while lens was extended. Thereafter would not retract and lens error. The IXUS 65 is european version of USA SD60 or SD630 Digital ELPH.
Tried pushing the lens back as explained below, clicked , but still would not work. I disassembeled the camera and removed the lens/motor assy. Then disassembeled the lens assy. 1 tiny pin had become dislodged causing the problem. 2 more of same tiny pins fell out. Now im not yet sure how/where they go back into place. If I cannot figure it out I see one can buy a new lens assy for circa $30 and just install it. I used my mobile phone camera to take video and shots of the disassembly steps. This to help re-assemble. I also disassembeled/ reassembeled several times as its trick and lots of tiny screws. To remove the pcb cables one gently pulls them using a small plyers or plastic gripper. If you need pics. [email protected]

This camera sucks! My boyfriend got it for me for this past Christmas and shortly after, it was already having focusing problems. Pics always looked blurry. Now it has the same problem that everyone else has..."lens error....restart camera."

Would Some Like to Fix Mine?

A

Anonymous

Hahahahaha !!!! i love you solution # 8. take the battery out as the lens is retracting and making that awful noise... that should do the trick... take that canon !

A

Anonymous

Take the battery out while the lens is retracting. this worked on my brothers camera.

A

Anonymous

My camera was knocked out of my hands and landed on the lens, then kept coming up with the lens error message but no amount of pushing or restarting helped until I took out the batteries as suggested on another site. I put the batteries back in, turned the camera on, lay the camera on its front (ie on the lens) and the lens opened out properly.
Hope this works for other camera droppers.

I took mine apart to reset the lens. it was a pain in the ass but it rest. now the only problem i have it wont turn on. some one plz help me. if u have any solutions email me @ [email protected]

The lens on our camera didn't retract one day and it wasn't because we dropped it. We tried to push the darn thing in but it's pretty sturdy. Canon/ authorized agents say they can fix it for just over a hundred or give us credit toward a refurbished one which would end up costing 150, but they that sucks and they charge too much for cheese work or formerly broken items. It's better to fix it yourself if you can to save the money or buy a new and affordable one at pricegrabber.com.

To get the lens to retract, we tried to do a slight twist over to the left (looking at the camera like your the subject - camera lens is facing you). Sure enough it went back in! But now it has trouble focusing. That's another question now. Darn thing...we'll see what else we can jimmy :-)

Good luck all!

I pushed down on the side of the lens that was further elongated than other side. it snapped one notch. I turned it on and it worked. so there is hope, I hope it works for you.

The error the camera is giving is that the lens can not extract or retract, and that the camera needs to be power cycled.

What happens is the lens extracts then retracts to a preset spot so the camera knows the lens is properly working, and can be used. If it does not perform as expected, the camera will then give the lens error/restart message. This is to give the user a chance to maybe remove some obstruction, or clear around the lens to allow it to perform as expected.
There is no reset, the only reset it is referring to is the power cycle to try to clear the lens.

As to the issues at hand, I would say that if you jammed the lens, there is not much that can be done to fix it. There is a gear mechanism inside the lens that could be misaligned, and that would save the cost of buying a new lens/camera.

I had the same problem with mine. i have the same camera and i dropped mine with the lense out too, and it would make a weird noise when i would turn it on and say "lense error, restart camera" or whatever. but i could still preview/look at my pictures
i tried restarting it by hooking it up to my computer, but that didnt work.
I / my dad ended up having to take it to an electronics store, and they had to send it to a camera manufacturing place or something.
basically i had to get my lense replaced, because i was told there IS no way of restarting it.
i know that wasnt much help :/
-good luck guys

My camera is a cannon power shot A560 and the lens wont open. How do i fixed it

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
