Free Garmin Map updates can be downloaded within 90 days of purchase or are free for a life time when it's purchased with lifetime map updates.
Software updates are always free.

Maps / software can be updated online by registering your Garmin at MyGarmin.com using the serial number and your name. On this website you'll be guided through the steps to download / install the required web browser plugin to communicate with your Garmin Nuvi.

When connected over the USB cable - MyGarmin.com shows compatible map or software updates. These will be free in the conditions mentioned above.

Note that updating a map online requires a 3Gb download. This can take a very long time and requires a stable internet connection. Also your Mac need to have at least 5 Gb of free space to install the Map.

A Nuvi software update is much smaller and takes less time to complete.

Sorry, no free maps. I know I've tried. You either live withthe old map or buy the latest version.
I bought the life time maps updates and I'm glad I did.
I've updated my maps at least 6 times.
New maps are about $70.
Life time maps are about $99 (when I bought mine)
BUT FIRST make SURE you have the latest software in YOUR computer and in YOURGarmin before you load any maps.

Once you do that you can download firmware updatefor free. After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin website,perform all future software updates from your computer. I don't have a Nuvi 1300, only a 200 and a 215. You may want to try loading only the Continental US map. Not the whole Northern Hemisphere. It maybe that your Nuvi 1300 doesn't have enough memory to contain the entire map.
I did the same thing with my Nuvi 200 when I first got it. Was ready to drop it onto the pavement from my third floor balcony!!! Went out and bought a second Nuvi that same day, and did the same thing to it too. I was livid all weekend long.
By Monday morning I finally got with someone there at Garmin who walked me thru the process and explained that the Nuvi can't hold that much info at once. Only part of the maps.

You can purchase map updates from garmin.com Two options a one time update. Or what i chose with my nuvi750 a lifetime update which lets you update up to 4 times a year

Just go to http://www.garmin.com There will be a registeration link. Yes I think that you will get a free mapupdate with your registeration at least they used to do that. You will need your unit serial number and model.

there is no such a thing as free map update,unless there was a special offer on when you bought your Garmin.

Have you already tried the webupdater or registred the device on garmin.com? There you should get an free mapupdate which could replace your broken maps.

I'm trying to upload the new city navigator europe nt 2008 but don't have enough space to do the operation, How can I delete the existing map's that are on the nuvi 660 euro? Can I just delete the file gmapprom.img ?
