My Janome sewing machine is 24 years old and has worked perfectly until this weekend. It is now missing stiches in an irregular fashion. I have changed the needle and this helped for awhile but when I am using thicker material the problem returns and it does three or four stiches properly, then nothing for 10 then one good one. .

Your machine has a timing problem and should be seen by a technician to repair it.It is possible that there is a loose part also.

Why does my old Janome sewing machine suddenly not sew a straight stitch anymore, but keeps throwing a zig zag every so often, after years of behaving ok?

Question edited for clarity, the name 'Jerome' to 'Janome'.
Question moved to maker category.

If it is a manual machine, something has come loose. If it electronic, you may be able to reset the control board.

They need servicing every 18 months to 2 years irrespective of how often you use them.

You are the only person to have this error.

I have an opportunity to buy a Janome 8002D serger. I don't know how old it is? What is it worth? Serial No.: 020050716 Lillian

Hello, Lillian -

I checked the instruction manual available for the Janome 8002D serger through the Janome website:
https://www.janome.com/siteassets/support/manuals/sergers/inst-book-8002deng.pdf
and did not find a date of printing on the manual (which would give an idea for the year/s the model was manufactured.)

I also found the following information on one of the Janome web pages:
(Quote)
For consumers looking to date an antique New Home sewing machine that was made in Orange, MA or Rockford IL, please click here. We are sorry, but no other New Home or Janome sewing machines can be dated.
The only information we can provide is a date of manufacture if you have the following information:
  • model number or style number
  • serial number
  • place of manufacture.

It looks like Janome still sells the model 8002D serger:
https://www.janome.com/en/machines/sergers/8002d/

As for the value of the machine you are considering purchasing, you can get an idea of the price/s sellers are asking by looking at online sales of that model sewing machine. Here are some links:
