Mixer gets hot and smokes when in use.

I recently purchased a used Kitchenaid mixer. I think it is from the 70's as it is avocado green in color. It looks great and is clean and seems to work good, however, the mixer gets hot and it smokes during use. I have only used it twice and feel it has not been used in several years. Do you think it needs to be oiled or greased, or possibly another problem? I cannot locate a repair company that does small motors in this area.

Smoking and overheating during use does not usually indicate a problem with motor oil. Kitchenaid stand mixers have sufficient oil in them to lubricate the motor for its lifetime.

Smoking and overheating are geneally caused by overuse. Consult your use and care guide or Kitchenaid Customer Service to ensure the mixer is being used properly. Customer Service would also be able to send you a new Use and Care Guide at no charge.

Their toll-free telephone number is 1-800-541-6390.

Mixer has had a los of power recently. Yesterday it began smoking and now it won't do anything. Any sugestions?

The motor is probably burnt out. You will need to either replace the motor or buy a new mixer.

That's why I buy $15.00 hand-helds.

I know someone that somehow fitted a hand-held mixer onto their old mixing stand. It's wworth a try when you consider shopping.

Used the bread kneading hook, after 10 minutes, smoking

The mixer motor has probably overheated, as proper use and care was not being followed with the stand mixer.

Bread doughs are recommended to be mixed on speed 2 only and never for longer than 7 minutes. With the resistance of a bread dough that is provided against the beater, mixing for over 7 minutes may overheat mixer and cause smoking.

Please consult your use and care guide to refresh your memory about how to properly use your mixer for making bread doughs.

My kitchenaid standmixer started to smoke, need to open

See my posts on removing the motor cover. DO NOT USE this mixer if it smoked. Something needs to burn to cause smoke. I doubt you can fix this without new parts.

KitchenAid 250 Watts; Classic: Leaking Oil

Found this,may be helpful.
Why do I see oil leaking from the beater shaft of my stand mixer?
Some KitchenAid® stand mixers that are not used very often or have been tipped may experience slight oil leakage from the shaft or hub attachment. To avoid the oil leakage, KitchenAid suggests that you run the mixer weekly for short periods of time. Generally, the mixer may lose approximately X cup of oil before repair is necessary. The oil used is FDA approved and is not harmful to consume, should any get into the food that you are preparing.

KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer - Tilt is Tilting too Much & hits the bowl!

This may have a simple solution: This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.

If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.

Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.

How do I add oil to my kitchenaid stand mixer?

if the oil is black or dark green this is the transmission grease. There is plenty in the case don't worry. You may have a cracked transmission case or a bad gassket. I think the most likely thing is a loose screw or two. Take the trim band off, 1 screw. Then take the 4 screws that hold the cover on. You can now lift the top and take a look for the sourse of the leak
