Archos 704 Wifi - does not play AVI file until its full lentgh

When I copy AVI film to archos, it plays the movie approx. 1h09min or so, and stops. I have checked the AVI file with XP media player, it is 1h 27min long. Tried different AVI files, the result is the same. Firmware: OS 1.7.20 Thanks. M.

EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM, RUNS FOR 1 HOUR AND 12 MINUTES, THEN GOES TO THE NEXT FILM. NOTHING ON THE ARCHOS FAQs ABOUT THIS PROBLEM EITHER, WILL HAVE TO CALL THEIR TECH SUPPORT AND HOPE THAT THEY CAN HELP.

same with mine dosnt play all to the end

    Talked to Archos tech support.

Archos have trouble playing files with file size >1GB.

Suggestion, when converting files to AVI, keep file size around 800MB with less resolution. ( not much an issue)

I have same problem. there has to be a solution that prevents me from having to re-convert all my movies to lesser quality, smaller size format... that would be an unacceptable solution. Most movies now are longer than 2 hrs and more than 1gb in size. HELP ME!

I had the same issue.
The size of the AVI cannot exceed 1gb or the end of the movie will never play.

I had a movie that was 1,7gb. 2 hrs and 15 seconds.
The Archos recognized this as a 1.7gb file and 2:00:15 long.
As soon as the movie started, the time line bar at the bottom of the screen went from 2:00:15 to 1:10:25. Basically, it cut off the last 50 minutes of the movie.

I simply divide the movie into 1gb chunks.

I decrypt the DVD to the computer
Use Nero Recode to convert it to and MP4. Divide the movie into 1gb chunks and Maximize the Volume.
Use SUPER to convert it to an AVI / MPEG-4 / MP3.
Copy this to the Video folder of the Archos.

This is simply something that Archos does not want to admit is an issue. They want you to purchase the Cinema plugin.

I read somewhere about a file size limit - as opposed to a playing time limit, 1G? 2G? I forget. It's a filing system limitation, not unique to Archos. If that's it, you might try converting your AVI to something with a smaller file size, or split the AVI into 2 files (part 1 and part 2)

Copying Video from archos 605 wifi to computer

I think the Archos 605 has a 2gb file limit, so the only option would be to split the avi.
Search on Google for an avi splitter - there are some free ones out there.

No audio on AVI files

Hi :

I would download virtualdub (free), install a divx convertor (free to some level), and input your original file in virtualdub (file-open file), check the video tab from VDUB, click compression, select divx, and save the file as an .avi file on harddisk of yr computer. If finished, check this avi file with a media player (winamp or so), see if it plays correctly, then transfer the file to your Archos. This will work.

I believe, when you converted, a stray codec was used for audio)

Change my program in archos 704

You can copy files via USB to the 704 using media player in sync mode or drag and drop in windows explorer. Which mode you use depends on what mode the 704 is set.

Install video on archos605wifi from pc without windows media player

I dont like it to use Windows media player and to synchronise.
In Settings -> System you need to set USB on 'PC Hard Drive'
Then you can use My Computer to find the Movies, just copy and past them in Archos -> Video map. Notice that Archos can't play any movie, you need special extensions.
I kow 1 exension, I convert my movies always in that 1 so Archos can read the movie: AVI MPEG4
There are more, but I need to find out.
Anyway, good luck trying to 'install' video's on Archos and also watch them ;)

Need to know quick

if you are putting a vob file on to the archos you will need to get the cinema plug-in from archos.com to play it then you just copy and past on to your archos. but it is better if you use a divx converter. you can get this for free just type it in to google. the converter will make the vob file into a avi file which is much smaller then you should just be able to copy and past on to your archos.

How to convert videos/movies on to my archos 605 media player? keep getting an error message

The archos will only play M-peg 4 type files unless you buy on of the plug ins, so the way round it is to crack a dvd using "dvd shrink" this will get round the copy protection then convert the cracked dvd to m-peg 4 im using "any video converter" tese programs can be downloaded free on the net. not sure if this is the easiest way but it works

Cannot play any movies

Hi,

A couple of procedures you can try:
1. Do a soft reset. Press on the power button for about 15 seconds;
2. Do a full/hard reset by removing the batteries and pressing the master reset button;
3. Do a Systems Recovery by powering on and immediately press/hold the TV button till Recovery Mode is displayed. Follow on screen instruction of Forcing Touch Screen Calibration. You may need also to format the internal HD but that would mean you loose whatever data is inside.

If the above is not corrective, it is possible that as you posted it may be a hardware issue. Some users have reported serious hardware or firmware problems with the 704 that would require replacement by the manufacturer.

Hope that this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
