  • Anonymous May 24, 2009

At first mine was fine, then after switching from an HDMI cable back to the A/V cable, it does this dimming and brightening as if its trying to amplify the image, but instead it just sucks...

This is probably normal and called "Dynamic Contrast". Maybe this company has some other proprietary naming.

Basically, the Backlight (LCD) or Bulb (Projection) will be dimmed during dark scenes to allow the TV to make a deeper black.

SOURCE: sony bravia dims randomly

There should be a setting in the menu of the TV to turn off the auto dim feature (used for adjusting the brightness of the picture depending on ambient room lighting) I don't have a Sony LCD here with me to walk you through the menu settings, but I am certain it is there somewhere. (Chased this issue for the wife who had the same displeasure you're having)

I have a Samsung 55in curved TV. It has auto dimming. In the evening with the lights out it dims to where it is difficult to see the picture. Can I get rid of the auto dimming?

If the brightness on your TV changes automatically (randomly dims and brightens), you may need to adjust the:
  • Eco Sensor function.
  • - And / Or -
    • Energy Saving function.
The Eco Sensor and Energy Saving functions adjust the brightness of the TV to reduce power consumption.
    • When you set the Energy Saving function to Auto, the TV changes its brightness automatically depending on what you are watching on the TV.
    • When you set the Eco Sensor to On, the TV changes its brightness automatically depending on the brightness of the room.

Hello. I have a Mitsubishi WD-65732. We are experiencing TV shutdowns about once every two weeks. Also, unless it it my imagination, the picture seems to dim/brighten depending upon other things on...

Hi,
I've suspect that your bulb has near to its end thats why you've encountered the subsequent shutdown and picture problem. This is the very common symptom of a faulty bulb. But since you've still watching your tv, this is not totally defective. I've advice you to look for a qualified technician to check the condition of the bulb before replacing with new one.
Hope it may help you.
Have a nice day.
Thanks for using Fixya.

Have a new 40'' Vizio VO400E LCD HDTV and randomly the brightness pulses for no reason when I'm watching TV. We have it hooked up to a Directv dvr.

check to see if your TV has an ambient light sensor that automatically changes the brightness of the TV based on the lighting conditions. Sometimes the sceen on the TV can impact the sensor and dim the TV for bright scenes. You should be able to disable this feature if you like.

Check the lamp timer to see how many hours are on it.  If is is near the estimated end of life for your TV replace the lamp.  It will get dimmer as it approaches its end of life.  The lamp timer should be in your menu.
