I have a white sewing machine, model 955. the knob on the side that controls the needle going up and down is really tight and doesn't move well. Also, when I step on the foot pedal it makes noise, but doesn't move the needle.

I suspect you have a minute piece of thread stuck in the raceway

Testimonial: "I've taken it apart and can't find any thread anywhere. Where is the raceway at?"

SOURCE: Needle doesn't move the problem isn't the foot pedal

Same problem with my 400. I took it in to dealer and they said main computer board on my machine would have to be replaced. Fortunately, they agreed to get it fixed for me. My machine is 2 years old. How old is yours? I wonder if this could be a manufacturer defect on the machine? Maybe this needs to be addressed with Viking Husqvarna Corporate.

SOURCE: Needle won't move

Please push the bobbin winder back to the left position and it will release the bobbin winder. Then you should be able to sew. If the needle won't move, you will need to tighten the turning wheel on the right side end of the machine. This should move your needle. Then you should be set to sew. This should help, it helped me!

How ar ware do you oil a white sewing machine model number 3355

Your White appears to be a mechanical machine. The instructions below address a seized machine, however, if your White has not had a thorough clean and oil recently, it could be susceptible to seizing.

I have a white model 742 sewing machine I bought used. I have threaded the machine oiled it but it will not sew.

If it is an older mechanical machine, most like the old oil has turned to varnish and is preventing the parts from moving freely.

I have a bernina 730 and it does a fabulous straight stitch but it won't do zig zag or any ornamental stitches

Assuming this is the older mechanical Bernina 730 Record (not the new computerized model)...Sounds like your machine is seized due to dried oil.

My Kenmore sewing machine model 158.12271 is locked. When I loosen knob on right side of machine, as you would to wind bobbin, everything spins. When I tighten knob....nothing moves and motor is...

Your machine is an older mechanical. As such, they do need a periodic complete oil. Sounds like your machine has seized due to old oil that has dried. Avoid trying to run the machine in its current condition as it can damage the motor. Most sewing repair shops would be able to work on your machine.
