It is SEIZED!! Take it in for service. Sergers should be seviced annually as they are notorious for seizing. It's an easy fix and your machine will be unrecognizeable upon it's return

SOURCE: the threads are not tight on my serger

Here is an easy way to get your thread adjusted. Rethread the machine using four different colors. Then sew and for example the "yellow" thread is loose on the fabric, you know to adjust the tension with the yellow thread. Also a good starting place on your dials is 4-3-2-1 from left to right. Start with the tension set there and then adjust as needed.

Does the Singer Serger Ultralock 14u52a use standard needles or do I have to get special ones?

Serger needles are different from regular sewing machine needles, but like sewing machine needles, they are generic. That means that if you buy a serger needle, it should fit most sergers from any manufacturer.

My favorite manufacturer is Organ; they've been in business for a long time and manufacture for commercial and home machines and sergers and they're quite inexpensive.

Lower looper problems

Some sergers require they be threaded in a particular order. If not, they do not "knit" the threads.

Raise the thread antenna to it's highest position.

Open the tensions (set at zero). If the tension settings are automatic, raise the presser foot to open the tension settings.

Turn the handwheel so the loopers are at their highest position. There may be a mark on the side of the serger to match up with a mark on the hand wheel for this.

Open the front of the serger and the threading guide should be printed on the inside of the serger door, or on the serger.

Start at the right and note which looper is threaded first and then the needles.

You can find more information and manuals at the Singer Co website.
