When we turn on our Etrex Venture, it won't stay on. The start up screen flashes on, and then it kind of fades off within 3 seconds.
I can solve this by not solving it. First I tried reset the unit to default settings: hold down the power, page, and enter buttons at the same time, a message, "do you really wan to reset..." will appear. Select "yes." If the unit reboots, hurrah. If not, call tech support (1.800.800.1020). Get an RMA, send it back to them for repair. I had purchased mine over 30 days ago but less than 60: Amazon wouldn't replace it, Garmin will either replace or repair. If you want them to send a new unit while the old is in transit, just ask; they will charge and then credit a card once they have the old unit is in hand. Good luck.

My Venture HC has or had the exact same problem, switching off after a few seconds. So I was unable to do a factory reset.
However, after reading the post by crataegus I got it working.
I powered up and then straight away held down the joystick button.
Even though the screen was black the computer/WebUpdater recognized it as a garmin and started to download the software. The Garmin then switched on a white screen with a "deleting software" message. It then froze for what seemed like 2 Min's with nothing happening on either screen. Then all of a sudden the new software was transfered to the Garmin. During this process I made sure the JOYSTICK BUTTON WAS DEPRESSED FOR THE ENTIRE OPERATION. (As I didn't want the unit to switch off during download)
Anyway for the moment my Venture HC is working. If it should cause further problems I'll return it.
What I cant understand is how can a software problem cause this when the unit was working for several months beforehand?
I purchased two new Garmin eTrex Venture HC units in summer 2009, and both developed this problem within 2-3 months. In both cases I called Garmin customer support and they had me try their Garmin WebUpdater. They sent instructions on how to hold the joystick to "boot block" the unit and allow WebUpdater to run. One support representative claimed WebUpdater would solve this problem "five times out of ten." In both my cases it failed to work. In both cases Garmin gave me an RMA and Garmin replaced the units promptly. The one customer support representative said it is a software problem and he does not know the cause.
We were using our units a lot in the field, keeping them on all day in our shirt pockets. Perhaps these Venture units are not rugged enough for such work. I have used eTrex Vista units for several years without this problem.
This DOES work! after about 40 tries i finally got it to recognize my venture hc.
My etrex would only put out a flicker of light if i pulled the battery out and then tried to turn it on.
So what i did was pull the battery out put it back in, connect the usb and then hit the power button and immediately hold down the joystick button. After about 40 tries it worked.

Same problem; the unit's startup screen appears, then changes to the "Acquiring Satellites" screen, then shuts off. Total time the unit actually remains on is about 9 seconds.
My etrex venture hc flashes and then the sreen goes blank.
My etrex Venture HC will turn on, begin to acquire satellites (but without the brightness slider) and will then turn off. I've tried new batteries; and even when plugged in via USB it does the same thing. Help please.
