SOURCE: sewng machine motor housing

DISASSEMBLY TO INSPECT OR CHANGE BERNINA 830 MOTOR BRUSHES:

Remove the big plastic cover piece on the bottom of the machine with the single screw in the center.

Remove the machine's end panel by removing the single silver screw from underneath the bottom middle of the side panel. Pull the bottom of the side panel out and down to remove it. It comes off easily.

Remove the two screws under the motor assembly (silver screws with black washers).

Swivel the motor assembly enough to remove the belt.
There is a another plastic panel on the motor assembly over the motor itself. Remove the two phillips head screws to remove this panel.

At this point you can see the commutator and inspect the "business" ends of the brushes. (In our case, one brush was almost gone and there was nothing left of the second brush except the spring!)

You can then slide the motor out of the housing. I pushed on the motor pulley and pulled on the other end of the motor with pliers. The motor comes out rather easily, but be careful not to disturb the wires any more than necessary.

With the motor exposed, unscrew the caps over the brushes and remove the brushes.

Our motor's commutator looks significantly worn and the motor may need to be replaced. If you find a source for the brushes or a replacment motor, please let me know! Thanks, John [email protected]

SOURCE: My machine Bernina 830 does not run.

Hi Rose Mary,

I'm assuming you are talking about the original Bernina 830 (their newest machine is also an 830!)

If you've not had your machine professionally serviced in awhile, it could be as simple as a good, thorough cleaning and adjusting. Your machine should be professionally serviced about every 1-2 years....not a bargain service that blows out the dust and puts oil on the hook, but a service that checks all the gears for wear, adjustments, hook timing, feed timing, grease for the gears (if required), removes lint build-up deep in the machine - very thorough.

There are various gears in the 830 that control these functions. It sounds as if one of the gears may be either broken or jammed. Unfortunately, unless you are trained in machine repair, this isn't something you should attempt. When gears are replaced or adjusted, generally the timing of the machine must be reset as well.

We would recommend that you take your Bernina to your nearest authorized Bernina dealer (they'll be trained on your specific machine and have easy access to any parts that may be needed).

If you do not know a dealer in your area, you can search on the Bernina website.

The original Bernina 830 was one of the greatest models Bernina has made and is well worth putting the money into keeping it running. Great machine!

Hope this helps narrow down what may be happening.

Happy stitching,
Kim & Linnette

SOURCE: Threading a Bernina 900

Place the thread spool on one of the two thread guides. Bring the thread across to the notch on top of the machine guide it to the left and down the front of the machine. Directly under that threader close to the needle wrap it down under and go back to the top right to left then go to the top lever in the up position use your wheel to the right , wrap from right to left going down and threading. Wrapping just means placing around. Now for the bobbin. take casing out wit bobbin thread counter clockwise place in casing and release handle of casing put in machine making sue it is locked in. THen go fishing.

SOURCE: bernina 830, worked fine until today... think it

there is a board inside the foot pedal that goes out sometimes you can check this by flipping the foot pedal upside down and at the top right there is a small hole where you can adjust the speed with a flat head screwdriver but be gentle it breaks easy, if its out you can take it to a bernina dealer and they might have a reapired one or they can send yours off for repair since that part is repair only

How can I access the Service program soft keys on my Bernina 830 when the Touchscreen is not calibrated ? The soft keys on the screen have either letters or numbers, can I attach a keyboard ?

If the touchscreen on your Bernina 830 sewing machine is not calibrated, it may be difficult to access the Service program soft keys. However, you may still be able to access the Service program using the following steps:
  1. Turn off your Bernina 830 sewing machine.
  2. Hold down the Reverse button and the Needle up/down button simultaneously.
  3. While holding down these buttons, turn on the sewing machine.
  4. Continue to hold down the Reverse and Needle up/down buttons until the Service program screen appears.
  5. Once you are in the Service program, you can navigate using the numbered soft keys that appear on the screen.
As for attaching a keyboard, it is not possible to directly connect a keyboard to the Bernina 830 sewing machine. However, some users have had success using a USB to Serial adapter to connect a keyboard to their sewing machine. This method may require additional software and configuration to work properly, and it is not officially supported by Bernina.

How to remove the top cover of Bernina 830. My machine keeps telling me to rethread. It stitches about 10 stitches then stops

Which Bernina 830 are you referring to? (Yeah, it was crazy of Bernina to use the same numbers to identify different models...). There is the old Bernina 830 Record and the new computerized Bernina 830.

Have you tried rethreading the machine? If so, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot. Verify the thread path is correct.

How do i adjust thread tension

Depends on your Bernina model. Some of the older mechanical models (830 Record, etc), the thread will wrap around a tension knob which you can turn right to tighten or left to loosen. The newer mechanicals, the thread passes through a slot at the top of the machine which is the tension disk, but somewhere nearby there is a dial to increase or decrease the tension. The computerized models, the tension is adjustable on the screen.

I have been messing with this system for over a year when I can make it down to my grandma's house. Using a Bernina 830.

The usb cable also needs to go to the cradle usb B connection of the cradle to the usb a connection of the computer. The usb connection on the computer is a separate animal.

Old bernina 830 stitching problem: tight

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.
