I put a mug of water in the microwave, left the room. Came back, and the room was filled with a burning electrical/plastic smell, no visible smoke. Now, the microwave completely powers off after 1 second of running. The power returns after the microwaves is left for a few minutes. I unplugged and tried to run it again a few times over a few days. The same thing happens every time. What are the most likely possibilities for broken parts? Thanks!

Since there was no smoke, it's not a transformer. It's most likely a high voltage diode or magnetron. The magnetron would be over heating and opening a thermal cut out mounted to or near it.

SOURCE: Samsung MU3250W Shut down

It could have been steam or humidity.

If this is an over the range model, be sure you always use the hood vent exhaust fan when you're cooking on the stove top.

Whether it's a counter top or over the range top, always be aware that the cooling fan is running when it's cooking.

When in doubt feel for air flow through the vents.

Good luck.

SOURCE: Samsung MW1080STA Microwave Oven

This is due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

You can order Samsung parts here.

You can find your nearest Samsung-authorized service center here.

To find out if yours was recalled, please call Samsung's Service Division at 800-932-3837.

SOURCE: Killed the microwave by running it empty for 30 minutes.

YES THERE IS AN INTERNAL FUSE OR DIODE YOU CAN CHANGE, BUT YOU SHOULD BE CAREFUL AN LET A PRO DO IT, YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO GET ZZZAPPPP WITH THE CAPACITOR THAT STORAGES HIGH VOLTAGE INSIDE TO PROVIDE THE MICRO WITH POWER, IT MAY SEEM LIKE A LIL UNIT BUT IT CAN HURT YOU IF YOU DONT DE-ACTIVATE IT RIGHT, NOT SURE IF THE DIODE WOULD BRING IT BACK BUT CHECK WITH A SERVICE MAN, BEFORE DOING ANYTHING I WOULD!

A styrofoam plate set a small fire in microwave. The inside is black with smoke stains. Can I still use the microwave?

Yes as long as you clean it well. Clean with hot water and detergent. Then get a fresh lemon and squeeze half into a bowl with hot water, put the other half on a plate. Cook for about 15 minutes. Wipe the body inside with a clean cloth. Put the lemon water and the half lemon back in there and leave them overnight. That SHOULD get rid of the burned plastic smell.

Never put Styrofoam in a microwave., glass and crockery ONLY.

Smoke and burning plastic smell in microwave oven

Burning plastic, not food? A component has overheated badly then, with a plastic case. The main suspect would be the high voltage capacitor in the magnetron supply. This is cheap and easily replaced ONLY IF you know what you are doing and can diagnose the fault. If you don't then DO NOT take the case off the unit as fatal voltages can be present inside even if the unit is unplugged.

I'd just buy another, as they are generally uneconomical to have repaired by a service tech.

Microwave worked this morning and now not.....made no noise just stopped heating.

HELLO.

The solution is to diagnose the magnetron as explained below.

* 1 Fill a mug with room temperature water from your kitchen sink.

* 2 Place the mug of water on the glass cooking plate inside the microwave.

* 3 Set the microwave on "High" for one minute and press "Start." You should hear the magnetron hum while it is working.

* 4 Remove the mug carefully from the oven by its handle. The magnetron is working properly if the water is hot or warm. The next step repair or a replacement of magnetron if the water is still cold.

Thanks.

Push start and a loud deep buzz then the smell of electrical wiring burning and smoke fills the cavity.

You have something major wrong with your microwave. May be time to replace.

My KitchenAid microwave oven's model number is KCMS185JSS-4. Manufacture date is July 2005. It's been working fine until today, with an occasional glitch in the digital readout... sometimes the letters...

Either your high voltage rectifier or magnetron (or both) has failed.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

We brought a Tesco microwave at CULLOMPTON Tesco, Devon last week. It cost £29.00 on its first major use - cooking potatoes for ten minutes - smoke seems to be coming from beneath the machine - it has...

This is almost certainly some of the protective oils and varnishes which were applied during manufacture flashing off.

All new products of this type do this to some degree but your description seems to indicate that it's much worse than normal with your machine.

Ordinarily, you can expect this to cease after a few uses and if the level of smoke and odour you've described is to be expected then the instruction booklet should say so. But as yours has visible smoke and a burning plastic smell I'd recommend that you exercise your rights under the Sale of Goods Act and return it to Tesco for a full refund or replacement. The smell of burnt lubricant is one thing, but a burning plastic smell means you can never trust the oven to be safe: none of the many microwave ovens which I've dealt with have ever smelled of burning plastic unless there was a fault.

You won't find any objection from Tesco as they do have good customer service; and when I lived in Cullompton briefly earlier this year the local branch was even better than usual at keeping customers happy.

I hope that you have found my reply to be of assistance and ask in return only that you return the favour by rating my answer.
