Hi,

If the drive you're referring to is the SCSI model, it doesn't have a "slave" option, but can be set to various SCSI ID's.

Click this link to get the skinny on all your jumper options:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/6848p/Jumpers.htm

If you are using it on an older MAC it should work fine set to ID 1, if you want to use it on a PC check first if the PC even has a SCSI connector(rare for PC's of the same age as that drive as they primarily used IDE). The cables look almost identical but are in no way compatible

Hope this helps FixYa

How to set jumpers in an old quantum fireball Lct20 HD. The master mode needs to be "jumpered"

Please look on top of your HD and u will see a table that show u the HD jumper setting (Master, Slave or Cable Select).
Then look again the rear side of the HD and u will see some pin that locate beside the power input of the HD, that is the jumper pin.

Now set the jumper according to your requirement refer to the jumper setting table just now. To set it just unplug the jumper (look like a U shape contactor covered with plastic) and plug it back according to the requirement. Sometime u may lost the jumper contactor, nevermind just use what ever conductor cable to roll between the two pin and make sure the pin is connected that all.

Quantum Fireball lct 30gig not recognized in Dell Dimension 3000

Turns out this particular drive needs TWO jumpers on it, to set it to CS. I received it used with a single jumper in the Master position, but after checking the Maxtor/Quantum website, it listed the jumper positions and showed the second jumper. As soon as I installed the TWO jumpers in the correct position, the Dimension 3000 booted right up and let me reinstall Windows. I had scoured the internet for many hours looking for a solution, none solved it until I decided to check the manufacturers website. Always start there!- Solved!
