Can you try your X1 on a PC? If the mic sounds weird on the PC as well as on XBL, then there's probably something wrong with the mic. But if the mic sounds good on your PC but not on XBL, then you probably need a new chat-controller cable, which should fix things right up.

In the settings menu for under Xbox dash board, there is a place to select how you want to listen, either through the stereo or TV speakers or through the headset. There is also a selection for headsset/stereo..
I had the same problem with the exactly same model of steelseries headphones! The only way that I could heare my friends talk was to change the settings in "preferences"-"Voice" and then change the "Voice Output" settings to "Play through Both" and then it worked. But the only problem is that when your friends talk, will the game Volume reduce and the chat volume increase. Hope it help! :)
Have you already tried to lower the volume on the headset itself some steps, during the call, until you hear the conversation clearly?
Just my 2 cents...

You may have kinked your controller cable when you moved all your Xbox stuff. You might as well get a replacement controller cable--Turtle Beach sells them for only $4.95 on their website. I'd recommend the newer white one since that looks to be a lot thicker.
Go to control panel click on sounds audio dvices then tab on voice and click on test hardware then click on next now there are two options one is recorder and second is playback. Now click again on next when you click on next both volume should be enable then click on next and then finish. Now 100% guaranteed it will work and you can voice chat now. Cheers!
I believe only voices from other players come through on the headset. Other game sounds (cutscenes, gun shots, explosions, etc.) come through the TV. Try checking the Chat or Accessory settings on your PS3 to see if there's an option to change where the sound comes from. It'll be in the PS3 dashboard (press the PS3 button on your controller). I hope this helps and don't forget to rate. Good luck and thank you!
