  • underpoincia Apr 25, 2009

I know that there is rubbing but I don't know how to fix it. I took off the platter and it is obvious that there is rubbing going on but I just don't even know where to start to try to fix it.

it is a Philco model K1628X. I didn't notice any packing screws or anything, but it wasn't packaged when I bought it.

My turntable will not rotate .. I take arm across and it makes a humming kinda noise ...it has been in storage for 3 years was last working at that time

The motor works then, that's the humming noise. If the deck has been in storage then the belt has likely perished or fell off. Remove the turntable matt and you should see a hole to get to the belt.
Search the net for your make of turntable belt. There are guides on youtube on how to fit new belts.

Hitachi turntable HT- L55 MAKES SCRATCHING NOISE WHEN ROTATING

Remove the platter and look for scrape marks on it. That will give you an idea of just where to look to find the part that is rubbing up against the platter as it spins.

Visually inspect the fan and the inside of the fan housing. It sounds like it's rubbing against something or is loose and therefore rubbing against something. May be as simple as adjusting and tightening a bolt or removing something that got into the fan housing.

Shipping screws are used the hold down the turntable during shipping.

I've just set up my Technics SL D212 turntable after moving house. It keeps skidding across records. I've tried the usual adjustments and leveled the turntable. Any clues?

Please make 100% certain the needle is still in place... To test this *GENTLY* rub your fingertip over it and you should hear noise from the speakers when you do. If there is NO noise then there is likely no needle.
Did you put the protective device on the needle/arm for the move? Is it still on there?
Sorry Mate, that the only thing I've got to help....

Low volume and unbalanced deck

Turntables require amplification, they have very low output on their own. If your Sherwood has an Aux input try using that, older receivers often had a built-in pre-amp on the aux jack. You can obtain a stand alone pre-amp for less than $50, I use one from mcm, #40-630.
