I have dual boot system. On one system my DVD (AW-G170A) works fine. On the other, it does not run or show up as a device. I tried uninstalling and installing and I get a message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I tried copying the whole driver file from my other system but to now avail.

Hi, the error code that you have is a known issue from Microsoft that needs a registry tweaks. Error code means "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)". You can click on this link for your reference http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us
To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
This will surely help you resolve your issue. Good Luck!!!
Thanks
Thanks,
The problem now become moot. I installed Vista and the subject partition and all is well. I believe the process you have suggested has been tried. ...uninstall.. (verify uninstalled) ...scan... re-install.. many times through the trouble shooting senario.
Yes this is the actual device name try googling it and you will get sony hits. http://www.direct2deal.com/Computer/2007/10/57919/deals.html

Code 39
loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Resolution:
Reasons
for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that
is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry
point in another binary file that could not be loaded.
Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.
Is that the actual model number?
Nowhere does that item exist on SONY's support page.
If so, it may no loger be supported....
Keep me posted.

This is a problem with the DVD Writer model. SONY DVD RW AW-G170a has problems reading DVD+/- R/RW Discs. But there is no problem with any of the DVD+/- R/RW Dual Layer, DVD Ram or CD+/- R/RW Discs. It is the reason that this DVD Writer lacks the correct bitsetting for DVD+/- R/RW Discs. There is nothing else you could do other than replacing the wirter with some other model.
