the spring will be at the lowest tension when the door is in the raised position
there should be an adjustment at one end where the spring is attached to adjust the ease to lift the door and hold it open so if thee is loosen that adjustment off and with the door held up ,refit the spring
The door spring can be seen on the side of the frame just below the bottom of the door. If the spring has just popped off you can put it back easily when the door is open. If the spring has become weak, you can get a new one from an appliance parts store or online.
Not much data to go on here. The latch on the door has a spring that holds it down in the locked position. when you pull the handle the latch goes up and you pull the door open. You will have to take the door apart and see if the spring broke or the plastic tab that holds the end of the spring is broken.
Usually this can be done easily by removing the door unit and removing the panel to the door wherein you will be able to get access to the door lock. If there is no damage to the pivot or the post to hold the lock and spring , you can push the spring and reset.
On the left side, remove the knobs and cover. The spring holding the door closed needs to be removed. Have someone hold the door closed while removing the door spring. Now let the door open and you will see two screws holding the door to the door rod assembly on the left side. These screws are usually 9/16. After removing the two screws, the door will pull off the door pin that is located on the right side.
If the door will not stay closed it is the spring inside door, or the small plastic piece that holds the spring which is attached to the $80.00 piece called outer door.
To fix it, it is EASY and you do not have to even take the inside cover all the way off. Just remove the three sides of cover by gently slipping a plastic putty knife around rim to release the clips. Then attach the spring to the small hole below where the plastic piece used to be, which is located in the metal on the glass frame piece, use tweezers, hold the other end of spring as you place spring onto plastic door latch and set into place!
Snap the inside cover back on and YAY! FINI!
Common problem on 2001 Ford Explores. The reason why your door handle doesn't unlock the door(can't be unlocked by remote either)is due to a broken spring located on the backside of the door handel INSIDE the door.
True that your one(or two) of your small exterior springs on your door handle are broken(will cause your handle to flap) but this IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM.
The door locks will work if there is a bit of tension holding the handle bracket up. I know it's hard to explain without pics. but here's the ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS.
It's not that hard..........
Remove the door panel, only a few screws and a few more holding trim around exit handle then, pull out "snap in" clips on bottom.
With a flashlight you'll see back side of door handle. To get to that area you'll have to remove one bolt holding a window frame.
Do that(with window in up position) then slide down rail, out of your way.
Now, get back to handle.
With your light aimed at the backside of handle left slowly the door handle as normal, and you'll realize(while looking at the mechanism) that tension(pulling down of bracket) needs to occur in order for locks(manual and remote)to work properly.
Trust me.....you'll figure it out.
Once you do, get a spring(pen spring, 30 cent hardware store spring, any small spring!) and hook one end to bracket and the other end to ANYTHING(OUT OF THE WAY) below the door handle thus, causing SLIGHT tension.
Try your locks...THEY WILL WORK! YEAH!
Replace that one window frame bolt(try your window...just the make sure), replace door panel and your done.
TOTAL COST: 30 cents or FREE(if you have a small spring)
Ford dealers will charge $150 to $285! Yikes!
