Hi,
To my understanding, this is a known/common issue with this particular brand/model. It would seem that the CCD is defective. Further, I believe Sony is repairing it as a settlement of some sort.
Am not sure if still covered, but you can try (866) 703-7669, or go to www.sony.com/ccdservice.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Sounds like its fried, there is probably not a fix for the problem that will not cost more than the camcorder. It could be the power converter on the device, a voltage regulator or capacitor might have gone thus cutting power the certain parts of the device like the screen and CCD.

If you are qualified to open the Camcorder then you can follow what I am going to say. The most important thing is to have the right precision screwdrivers so that you can open the side of the camera that has the LCD screen. The problem with it most likely to be the socket that goes to the LCD screen inside the camcorder that is no longer connecting properly so that you have to put it back an seal it with some reinforcing tape. if you are not sure on how to do this please tell me so that I can send you instructions and the pictures to show you how it's done.
