If you have a Craftsman, under the seat is the model number. Go Here to get the operators manual. The manual will have all the belt diagrams. Water Filters Lawn Garden Appliance Parts
I HAVE A CRAFTSMAN 18 H.P. 3 BLADE 46" MOWER DECK. 1. THE PLASTIC PULLEY COVERS ON BOTH SIDES OF MOWER...WILL TRAP STICKS AND DEBRIS WHICH VERY RAPIDLY WEARS THOSE BELTS..I REMOVED MINE IF IT IS RUBBING: 1. EITHER THE BELT HAS STRETCHED-REPLACE 2.THE SPRING MOUNT (WELDED TO DECK) GOT BENT...STRAIGHTEN
Go to Craftsman, Order Tree or Parts Tree.com and input your model number. Choose the correct tab and go to the mower deck. It will give you a good over view of how the belt routes. Hope this helps.
The fact is that belts don't stretch. They wear down on the sides, causing them to ride deeper in the pulleys and they APPEAR to be longer. Check belt "width" to see if it is less than one half inch. Most craftsman riders use half-inch (AKA: "A section") belts.
I don't have a deck diagram but you should be able to figure it out it you put the back part of the belt (flat) up against the pulleys that are wide and the narrow part (v) into the smaller pulleys. It might take a couple of times but it is not that hard to figure out. Also put the (flat) side of the belt on any tension idlers. Hope this works.
In the Google search box type belt and pulley diagram craftsman lt 1000.....then Search images. The first 4 images feature "springs" however, you can clearly see the motion belt diagram. Hope this information is helpful.
Hi Paul It sounds like the belt is worn, stretched, or possibly just two long for your machine. Save yourself a lot of aggrivation by checking your operator manual and getting exactly the right belt for your mower.
You don't say how old your machine is but if it has been mowing for many, many hours, the tensioning spring may need to be replaced. If that is the case you can order a new one at Sears.com
