Hi Jean, The issue can occure only when the HP printer is not gettting enough power supply or the scanner bulb is not getting heated up properly.. You can isolate the issue by directly connecting the printer to wall jack and powerup the printer and try to make a copy so that we can check the copy function as the copy, scannig and FAX use the same scanner bulb to performe all functions.. If the copy does'nt work try to lift the scanner lid and check if the scanner bulb is lit and the scanner machinasium is moving fine or not .. lift the lid and press scan button to check the functionality. If the printer is connected to a surge protector or power strip this will some time fail to provide the required power supply to the printer so connect it to wall outlet and check with the issue.. There is also a FIRMWARE UPDATE RELEASED BY HP to fix the some of the scanner failure and receving faxes issue with HP 6110 All-in-one Here is the weblink to download and install the firmware update just click on the link to open the download page and then click on download and select save to save the patch to computer and run it to install the update make sure that the printer is connected and turn on while installing the patch The link to download: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=oj-14700-3&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=79477&os=228&lang=en Hope this will fix the issue.. If the issue is with the scanner failure message try the instruction in the below weblink: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00787271&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=79477&dlc=en&lang=en Wish you success Jean Regards, Barret

ECM error message

Noise in the phone line, or low signal strength during fax transmission can result in fax failures. Noise or poor signal strength can cause a partial or complete loss of fax information during transmission. When Error Correction Mode (ECM) is on, the receiving fax machine checks the fax information for errors during reception. If the receiving fax machine detects an error, the receiving fax requests that the sending fax resend the information. Resending all or part of the information can make transmission times longer, but helps improve the quality of the received fax.
If the phone line quality or signal strength is extremely poor, sending a fax can fail. Turning off ECM can improve the ability of the product to send a fax successfully when the phone line quality is poor. However, the image quality of the received fax might be poor.
If ECM must be off to send faxes successfully, have the telephone service provider check the phone line quality. For an HP Fax, turning off ECM from the control panel does not necessarily mean that fax transmission will not use ECM. Fax products use ECM as follows.
  • All faxes sent in color use ECM.
  • All faxes sent at the highest transmission speed use ECM.
  • The ECM setting affects only sent faxes, not received faxes.
Enabling or disabling Error correction mode (ECM)
  1. On the product control panel, press the Menu button (c01743394.gif ).
  2. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select Basic Fax , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ).
  3. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select ECM Mode , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ).
  4. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select On or Off , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ) to confirm the setting.
  5. Press the Back button (c01496476.gif ) twice to return to the main screen.

HP All-In-One can send but cannot receive fax or can receive but cannot send

One of the most common problems with HP All-in-One Printers is that they can send out fax but cannot receive or they can receive fax but cannot send. Now, what more could possibly be the problem if you are sure that your connection cables are correct and properly setup? Well, most people don't know that this is more often than not, caused by the ECM feature of the fax.

ECM or Error Correction Mode is used by fax machines during transmission. This feature is used to eliminate transmission problems especially when you have a "dirty" or noisy telephone line or a very poor signal can result to fax failures. ECM mode, when is turned ON is supposed to check for errors and glitches and is supposed to make the reception or transmission of faxes come out successfully.

However, for some reasons, the ECM mode is not supposed to be performing well with its feature. Especially if the user has a problem with the telephone line, the more that they cannot receive or transmit a fax. It is then recommended that your HP All-In-One printer's ECM fax settings be turned OFF. To do this, follow the steps below:

1. On your printers front control panel, press the button with the wrench symbol; this is the Setup button.
2. Press the right > or left < arrow until you see Advanced Fax Setup then press OK.
3. Press the right > or left < arrow until you see Error Correction Mode; again press OK.
4. Press the right > or left < arrow until to select Error Correction Mode OFF. Press OK to confirm.

That's it! You may now try to send out a fax or ask a friend to send you one.

is the phone line stable..meaning no distortion ... if there is some distortion like static sound.. you won't be able to fax properly.. try enable to ECM mode in your fax unit.. ECM is error correction mode.. it should reduce the send/rec error...

Error Log Result 232... The telephone connection was lost.

Error 232 Definition A communication failure occurred between the two machines. The user at the remote machine might have pressed the Stop key. The call waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line. Do not use call waiting on a line with a fax machine. The power at the remote machine was interrupted, or deliberately turned off causing the fax session to be interrupted. Check the following items: Make sure that you have plugged the phone cord directly and securely into the wall jack and into the back port of the fax product. The fax port on your product is marked "Line," "To Wall Jack," or with a wall jack symbol. Make sure the Line Interface Unit (box that the phone cord plugs into) is fully seated into the back of the fax product. Remove any other devices from the line such as splitters, credit card machines, or telephone answering machines. Try sending and receiving faxes on a different fax line. Try using a different telephone cord. Have the phone company test your line for static or noise problems. Turn Error Correction Mode (ECM) off, if you encounter the same error repeatedly Solutions If the error persists, and error correction is in use for the fax session, disable ECM. Fax quality might be degraded. Set the host machine to receive at a slower transmission speed. Retry the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve. These errors can occur if the phone lines in the area to be faxed are old or there is noise (static on the phone line). Other reasons can include power brownouts and other power-related problems. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe
