After using our new D80 for a couple weeks with no problems, we started getting an error msg in the control screen: a flashing "F--" The manual says that this indicates either no lense attached (obviously not the problem) or a non-CPU lense attached - which aslo isn't the problem, as it's a Nikon lense which was supplied with the camer. I was able to get it to stop by turning the camera off and taking the lense off & resinstalling it. But this only worked for about 3 more pictures before the error returned. Help!

I've had the same problem, after the camera worked perfectly well for about a year (I'm using the D80 with the 18-200 VR lens). Haven't had a chance to try cleaning the contacts yet. I have the same problem...The AF stopped working after a few weeks of the F-- problem. Exchanged the lens for a brand new one and now I'm having the same F-- problem. Also, spots on my pictures you can see on all blue sky shots, cleaned the lens and filter and still had spots. R05 code?????

Nikon D80 with a 18-200mmDX lens- built in flash will not work or open and when shutter is pressed an r05 appears. Everything else works but I cannot get the flash to open and work. My D80 will not take any pictures. It would take a few when I'd turn it on and then off, and take the battery out- but now.... it is like I'm not even trying to take a picture. The CPU contacts on the lens can sometimes get dirty and they can be cleaned by gently rubbing them with the eraser end of a pencil. Be very careful to not get any of the eraser rubbings into the lens. Also, when handling a lens, don't touch these contacts, as the sweat from our hands is not good on the metal.
I have the same trouble with my D80 and 18-135. I've noticed the because the lens mounting ring in this lens is plastic, its comes away from the body when you are supporting the lens with your hand and in doing so the contacts are no longer making contact with the body. If you hold the lens and pull gently, you can actually see it moving and exposing the contacts. I've spoken to Nikon and its going back under warranty
Having a similar problem and only taking pictures outside when not zoom in. i did everything, cleaned the contacts and still having the same error.. please help

As we can read on several forums on the Internet, the plastic bracket on the 18-135 kit lens sometimes get bad connection to the camera house. Affortunately this also can accour when using some other lenses, as Tokina and other Nikkors.
Try to demount and re-attach the lens and it should give effect. Otherwise, go back to the dealer and ask for a new one. They should know about the "problem".

It sounds like your camera's CPU is stuck in a loop. First, I'd remove and transfer any pictures on the SD card in a card reader connected to your computer, followed by formatting the card. Leave the SD card out of the D80. Set the power switch on the D80 to "off" and install a freshly charged battery. If it is still flashing, a "Full Reset" may help.
Nikon recommends that a full reset be done only under direction of Nikon staff. The procedure is outlined along with graphics on this page under "Full reset". I suggest calling Nikon support to see if they think this procedure (or maybe another that they have) will solve the problem.
That is just a mechanical problem. There is just a little hook holding the flash and it retracts when you push the bottom to pop up the flash. I'm sure it can be easily fixed, never the less your camera store or Nikon should take care of it. So take it back to the place you bought it.
Remove the lens, clean the contacts, reattach the lens, and jiggle the lens to seat the contacts. If that doesn't fix it, either the camera or the lens may require service.

My d80 shutter is malfunctioning. After a good shot a flashing ' error' message is display on the control panel. The image is alternately capture.My d80 is almost a year now.

I also purchased a Bower 724AFN to use with my D80, and experience the same problems. Received confirmation from Nikon that this flash unit is not compatible with the camera. I then purchased an SB-600 flash, and haven't looked back. It's worth the extra money for this high quality unit; fully compatible, and compliments the TTL features of the D80. I'll never deviate from original Nikon accessories again.
