My Nikon D40 will not auto focus with the quantaray lens...when I bought the lens...they assured me it would be compatible with the d-40...where did I go wrong?
On a Nikon D40, set the control knob on top to M for manual. The lens will work just fine. This is for a manual focus only. I use a D40 with a Phoenix 500/1000 mm manual focus with great results.
The D40 is like all Canon EOS bodies.
Autofocus motor is in the lens, not in the camera.
You can look if it has a pin at around 5 O'Clock from the front of the camera body. Looks like a small screwdriver's tip.

Technically it is compatible... just you have no autofocus. You can still use it as a manual focus but I can't imagine it being much fun over that sort of range. I'm getting a 70-300 macro af lens that is manual focus only for my d40, but for macro i prefer to manual focus.
In the end their definition of campatible was different to yours.
Your camera is only compatable with AFS-type lenses because it has no screw-drive motor. You can only use AFS Nikkors and Sigma HSM lenses (the lens actually has a motor inside). You were misinformed. Bring the lens back and ask for a refund. Take that money and purchase a compatable lens somewhere else.

purchased a 420-800mm lense plus T adapter (manual only) on fitting T adapter to lense and then onto camera body the results were
a/ monitor indicated Lense not attached.
b/ could focus lense but would not take picture.
c/ difficult to remove T adapter from camera body.
The camera is a Nikon d40x the other lenses which have motors are ok.
Was informed that it is normal to indicate not attached due to no electrical contact in lense and does not prevent it operating.
