SOURCE: MAYTAG,AUTO DEFROST PROBLEM
The defrost timer is normally located in the area of the temperature controls. There is a clutch head knob on the timer which can be rotated clockwise very slowly until a click is heard. Wait 30 minutes and defrost should take place in that time period. If defrost does occur and the system does not restart cooling, rotate the knob more and you will hear a second click and the compressor should start .
If the system restarts in the cooling mode in 18-22 minutes the defrost timer is good and the problem is more than likely in the defrost heater circuit.
SOURCE: maytag side by side freezer leaking water and icing in bottom
Defrost drain system is plugged and not draining out the back and into the drain collector. There is normally an air trap in this drain line under the back and behind a fiber removable panel. Check this trap and make sure it is clear of any blockage. You will then have to defrost the freezer and clear out the ice. Don't forget to replace the back fiber panel.

SOURCE: Maytag model MQU1556AEW, frost-free freezer forms ice in bottom.
I'm not sure if this will help but the freezer that is located on the bottom of my refrigerator started forming ice on the back part where the cold air was supposed to be coming out. I kept hearing a hissing sound like water dripping on a hot surface. I called the repair man in and he had to replace the defrost timer. Once he did that it worked like a charm.
I am not an expert by any means although removing ice from a frost-free freezer is a pain and this took care of the problem for me. Good luck!
SOURCE: Top of freezer is warm and bottom is forming ice. What do I replace?
The cause if no defrost cycle , remove the panel where the ice is and derost with unit unplugged , use a hairdryer or similar to defrost ice , make sure its all defrosted , check the heater under that coil to make sure its still intact.
Also check the defrost timer , there may be a wiring diagram on the back showing where this is located.
