Laptop fan does not engage when hot, but spins up upon boot

IBM laptop Thinkpad a21m. The laptop fan upon bootup spins up for 3 - 5 secs then turns off. The fan doesn't engage when computer gets hot anymore.(laptop hot on bottom and keyboard) I have replaced the fan unit and still the same problem. Any suggestions on where else I should look to resolve the issue. Also upgraded the BIOS but there are no fan settings there.The fan use to work and suddenly stopped, this is why I replaced the fan.

    This is a rather old laptop and the supporting BIOS doesn't have a fan setting. I did upgrade the BIOS to the most recent but the problem still exists. You mentioned resetting the program. Are u meaning upgrading or ?

Hi this is due to the fan settings in BIOS Program has been not correctly mentioned,so u cant find the fan setting in BIOS Program reset the BIOS Program it will helps u to activate the fan setting.when u got the fan setting u can solve the fan problem in ur laptop.In ur laptop fan is giving u the problem but the BIOS setting is creates the problem reset BIOS Pgm and then u can fix the fan problem without changing the fan again.

To reset the BIOS read the information from this link.

In case of your laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.

How do you lighten the screen on the ibm a20m laptop computer?

The following key combinations can be used for screen brightness:
•Fn + PgUp Turn the ThinkLight on or off.
•Fn + Home The LCD becomes brighter.
•Fn + End The LCD becomes less bright.

Hi: I change the cmos batery to my laptop A21m(2628)and continue working good; then I turn off about two weks but when I tried to turn on...wont'turn on. Just blink the ligth of the HDD and make no noise,...
try to disconnect the power and remove the battery then try to install it bak if it continue to blink try to press and hold on pwer buttom for than 15 sec then try to turn ur laptop again

My ibm laptop contionusly beeps and says power scource is battery,when i press esc, it boots normally and shuts down in about 15 mins to half an hour
Either:
A. Bad battery
Or
B Bad power supply.

Sounds like the battery isnt charging correctly , the beeping is warning you it is running out of power.

Take the battery out , and boot normally with the ac adapter.

Does it work?

If yes, Get new battery. about 70-90 dollars.

If no. Get new ac adapter. 20-40 dollars.

ThinkPad A21m won't boot into Windows
Did the laptop you got come at least with a windows XP cd? If so boot the laptop off of that and try to install Windows XP and see if it goes thru. Just make sure during the installation you tell it to delete the partitions first and then let it go thru that way you know for sure the hard drive is clean at that point.

It must be a processor overheating problem, check the vents are not restricted and if the fan is always on or never comes on because of a faulty temp setting then theres a overheating problem and the processor will shut down before any damage.
