OK, on day when i turned on my iriver, it says "system files missing, to restore the system files, connect H10 to iriver plus." so i connect it to iriver plus and the iriver says "USB connected" but iriver plus doesnt recognise t, like it is not connected, i have tried what other soloutions were given, but the iriver doesn't appear on my computer, but it does on safetly remove hardware, i have downloaded the newest version of iriver plus and it still doean't work. i cant get it to do anything now, not even turn off with =out takinging the battery out.
Okay, my IRiver broke with the same kind of problems but I've managed to fix it!
First off i connected the IRiver to the pc, and whilst it was connecting, pressed the 'select' button (the one on the front with the circle on it) to force it to connect.
Next i right clicked on it and selected format to wipe everything off it (just to make sure it was blank).
Next, go to www.iriver.com and on the left hand side click Support->Download and click on H10 in the product box. On that page should be a file to download called "[MTP]H10 5G/5G Pure/6G Firmware Upgrader/Recovery Tool(US & EU only)". The download icon is just underneath the title of it, so download, unpack using winrar ot winzip etc, then double click and follow the instructions.
It wiped the songs off, but i have an IRiver that works! Its an awful product in my opinion, but better to have it working than not. Can't guarentee that it'll work for everyone but it fixed mine first time.

The simple fix for this problem is to take your iriver and smash it with a hammer. Obviously iriver has no idea how to fix this and are scamming a sht load of people out of money. So, just smash it with a hammer and mail the pieces back to iriver and ask, Can you fix that? I already mailed mine and have yet to hear back. Maybe if they get enough of these crappy smashed irivers back they will dedicate a little more time to fixing them before we go and smash them with some hammers.

I agree with Heracles83's approach (thank you, it finally worked for me!). However I would like to add something.
I own the H10 20GB model.
I tried the above approach a dozen times, but could not get the format to complete, until I noticed a little blurb from the iriver USA site concerning updating the firmware. http://iriverinc.com/support/mtpupdate/
The player must be in UMS mode in order to update the firmware and, as I finally figured out, to format the drive as well.
The above link will explain how to connect the H10 to your PC via UMS mode.
I was able to format on the first try after that, and the updater worked immediately.

I think Heracles83's solution is only workable for those REALLY have system files missing problem, whereby those like me with hdd spoil problem, this solution is not workable.

Hey that either means that you have a bad HD in your player Sadly a common problem.Or your player was formated wrong Step 1. Go to iriver.com download the firmware updater/repair tool. Then install and run the tool using their directions {may take a few tries}. Then if still no dice. turn on the player and hold it up to your ear if you hear a LOUD click click click before the system files missing junk then you have a 90% chance of a bad Hard drive Email me at [email protected] for More help or to find out how to fix it.

I plug H10 to my pc. It says "new hardware found", however sometimes I am able to access it as a portable device in My Computer for about 15 seconds. Then the iriver display says "Ok to disconnect". It just wont sync properly so I can manage my music.

Okay, as i have found out so far, lots of people have this problem and there is no solution except to get a new hard-drive or buy a new one. but i have email iriver again with a link to this page and i will see if i get a reply. because this is just unacceptable.

So many ignorant and iliterate peopel here.... If you were able to recover your H10 by using MTP updater that's fine, but your post doesn't belong here. Original poster as well as some others including me, can NOT connect in UMS mode... get it?? So we're all stupid not to know how to press and hold "o" and "Power" buttons at the same time?? Whoooa...
Tell me what to do when not connecting in UMS mode after 20 or so retries.

i had experience that problem too, but if you wouldn't mind..try to change the operating system of the iriver..change it to rockbox, it works.

This is ridiculous. I called Iriver and they said the only thing for me to do would be to pay them 100.00 for them to fix it. But, I am going to try the idea the was already posted, hopefully it will work.

For a long time, my iRiver displayed a "System Initializing" message on startup. Now, since i disconnected the battery and let it sit for a couple of months, i get "System Files Missing. To recover system files visit iRiver.com. (or something along those lines.)
When i visit iRiver.com, there is NOTHING there about H10s or "recovery" for them. All they're trying to do is sell NEW iRiver stuff.
WHY ON EARTH would i buy anything else from these people?????

I took the hard drive out of that one and put it in the other but I get the same message. "system files missing" My computer will not recognize the H10.

O.K. so I've tried the solution posted by Heracle 83 and am having the same issues as Me59 - when pressing the o and the start button at the same time, I do get the UMS mode message, but it flashes very quickly at the top of the screen, disappears and that stupid "System Files Missing" message reappears...I've tried about 10 times and NOTHING!!! I'm ready for the Hammer Fix It!! Has anyone found a solution yet? Or do we converge on iRiver demanding a new product or our money back to buy a new product, jeez!
