Ati2mtag causing crash - ATI vid card

Give this a shot - solves the problem for sure:
Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)
Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.

The ATI Web site says; they are aware of this problem, since (in their opinion) it does not represent a problem they have no 'Fix', if you don't want the CRT error is Event Viewer roll back to
Catalyst 7.6 and that version does not have the problem.
Personal opinion; they have known for the past FIVE months and done nothing.... is it a coincidence that is about the same time AMD took over ATI?
So, bottom line, roll back to ATI Catalyst 7.6 and loose all the improvments since to get rid of a bug that they really do not care about. "Merry Christmas" from ATI.

I also started getting this problem after updating the driver. Mine's a Radeon x800gto agp - as it's not pci-express I won't be trying the "agp to pci" change.

Indeed I had other problems before and rolled back, but hoped the recent update would be OK...

Maybe only the newer cards are considered in the updates these days. AMD certainly seems to have little interest in older ATI cards.

Its not the video card, it is the software from the video card interacting with the Microsoft OS and causing corruption. Use Windows 7 Manager (a 15 day free trial app) to correct the problem.

I'm running a Dell Optiplex GX270 (2.8GHz P4) and a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro. It would lock up after a couple of minutes of playing flash content in my browser, or about 2 minutes after I fired up my Leadtek TV tuner card. Sometimes I'd get the BSOD, but with the text so badly garbled I could not read the error. On rebooting, I noticed event viewer was also reporting atimtag.sys errors and that my video card was not responding to the driver and getting stuck in a loop. It turned out the cooler fan on the GPU died. I rigged a cooling fan from an old AMD Athlon XP processor to the video card's heatsink and it fixed the problem.

I tried the lastest drivers from ATI's website dated March 2009 and the problem still happens.

How do you downgrade the driver version when you don't have the install CD? What drivers do you need if you don't want this garbage to continue. I can't believe that ATI would not address this problem ASAP!

I have an x800.

I've been trying to find solutions for this for 2 days and the only thing that has worked for me was to lower my AGP speed to 0 using SmartGart in the ATI Catalyst. Doing this automatically turned off Fast-Write, AGP Write, and AGP Read, but it allows me to play the games without too much performance loss.

I had the same problem as being reported here when playing BattleField2. Would get this crash within 30seconds or after 1 hour of game play. I have a ABIT Radeon 9600XT 256M.

Tried a Solution#4 but this left the game unplayable due to poor graphics.

What seems to have corrected the problem was downgrading the drivers. I had previously been running the latest but I downgraded to the drivers that I originally got when I purchased the card.

I havent had a crash since (1+month of gaming glory :-) Hope this helps someone.

Hallo, das Problem ist der Chipset vom Motherboard.Habe andere Treiber und Hilfsprogramme probiert - ohne Erfolg. Dann habe ich nur MSI PM8M3-V mit Via Chipset ausgebaut und gegen ASUS P4P800E-Deluxe mit Intel-Chipset getauscht - Fehler behoben.

I had the same problems, with the ati2mtag stucked into a loop, and i finally changed my power supply, havent got any more freezes or artefacts since this.

I had this problem with SPORE. Whenever I started spore it would bomb out after the initial splash screen. And spit this error to my logs.

I changed my AGP aperture from 256 to 128 in my bios and it let me play. Now it's doing it again. Why? I have no idea.

Ugh. This was painful. My system seems to be stable and working now.

First I upgraded to the latest Catalyst software 8.6 from ATI.com (part of AMD these days)

The key appears to be an updated motherboard AGP chipset driver that I installed from my manufacturer's website (MSICOMPUTER in my case). Windows update didn't catch it.

The particular game that was causing me problems (Spore) also need a minor adjustment to the firewall to allow it to connect to the internet.

I'm having the same problem with my ati card. but when I change CPU to AGP Controlller to PCI standard my computer stopped freezing but my fps was lowered with around 40... anyone know why? My ati card is Radeon x800 GTO.

I have tried the uid download and another site i tried mentioned that a fully up to date .net framework could be another problem. Like crumb82 im trying to run CoD4 and its just not stable, sometimes i can play a level or two and other times it will crash before it loads properly.
Its defo around this issue of the drivers i think, i've tried using an older version of Catalyst Control Centre with a newer display driver and that doesnt seem to have helped.
If i update past version 7.6 of the catalyst drivers none of my games including world of warcraft will work, 3d acceleration will just not initiate when any game attempts to load.
However, using older drivers i can play virtually any game including wow and im getting a solid 40 - 60 fps on wow during raids with graphics at moderate settings.

i Just dont understand why this is happening, other avenues i need to explore is to try some omega drivers and try the uid update now i've fully updated the .netframework but im not holding out much hope, seems to me i just need to replace this absolute runt of a card which is a pain in the ass as i only got this one as money was and still is tight for me :S

one odd thing is that it will run, just wont run stable which is what is really baffling me.

I have the same card and the same problem, but with call of duty 4. you could try flashing the gpu bios , the latest i could find is version 008.015.058.00. this didnt help me but this time but has helped me before with other games. i am now going to try going back to catalyst 7.9 and see if it helps. oh, i am using omega drivers based on catalyst 7.10 and also tried regular old ati drivers, i will let you know how i go!

Go to micrisoft update and into the hardware updates and get the uid download after a year of crashing my pc and replacing ever thing but mobo that fixed it

I'm having the same problem as "ati2mtag : CRT invalid display type" .
and also roll back to CAT 7.6.
changed CPU to AGP Controller to PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
modified the Monitor type to VGA 1024 x 768.
and also use the MOD radeon OMEGA drivers but all failed to works on it.
i'm still looking forward the best solution. Seriously, i'm regret to buy this ATI's card.
