Control panel is sensitive on this model. Mine did the same and machine would not wash to the programme, stopped half way or would not set at all. Switch off machine and unplug from the mains. Leave for 10 minutes. Plug back in and switch the machine to your required programme. You should find this solves the problem. It worked for me.
Failing that, go to the Hotpoint website, find the customer service number and ask if there is anything else you can do to solve the problem yourself. That is what I did and I followed their advice. It saved me the cost of a service call out and they were very helpful. Good luck
