My Speedlite 560-II will no longer fire. It will if only fire it I test via pilot button but will not fire attached to camera body or with wireless remote. Please please help! I have only had it a few months and the only "damage" it had had is being dropped maybe a foot onto a mattress.

SOURCE: 580EX speedlite not firing

Does the pilot lamp light up? If so can you fire it manually by pressing on it? If the batteries are low it may simply just be taking a while to charge, the camera will not wait for it to be ready to fire and it may seem to be not working. If your flash can be fired manually however, there may be a problem with the cameras shutter or the hotshoe. You can do a basic check by pressing the star button at the rear of the camera, you should get a pre-flash. If not, there is a problem with the cameras hotshoe which you will need addressed by a service centre. If you get a preflash you can next check the cameras shutter by setting the second curtain to sync with the flash. This can be done via the cameras "Custom Function" menu, c-Fn 15. Set the camera to TV mode and chose a 1 second exposure. Take a shot with the flash attached, if the shutter is working correctly, the flash should fire a pre-flash and then a main flash. If it doesnt, the switch inside the shutter is broken and the shutter needs to be replaced. This is a pretty labour intensive repair and you may consider an upgrade as more economical.

SOURCE: QFlash does not fire

You have a defective PC Cable.

Try this:

Turn on flash and wait until ready.
With PC cable connected to flash only.
Short out center pin to outside of PC Cable, this should fire the flash.

SOURCE: Trigger a Speedlite 430EX II with a studio flash

  1. Make sure the trigger you are using is compatible with digital flashes.
  2. isolate the smaller contact so they do not "short out" on the trigger.
  3. make sure the trigger is working and will fire other flashes

If you had the ATG Gold MG8k Flash Kim X3, then your 430EX II or 580EX II can transforms into wireless radio ATG ETTL II.

If you are using the outdated wireless IR ETTL with a 580EX II as a Master. Then you have to set the Slave (ATG/580EX II/430EX II) body facing close to the Master.

Canon Speedlite 580ex ii - won't work with camera

Caroline, you should try to set the camera on "M" and the flash in 2nd curtain flash sync.

Or set flash in ATG wireless IR ETTL Slave modes and pop-up the flash on Canon EOS-70D.

Test button- fire, but when attached to hot-shoe (camera or trigger) doesn't fire. Why?

Check the hot shoe contacts and make sure they're clean. If that doesn't help, place the flash on your camera, turn both on and reset the camera to factory default through the menu settings. Also make sure the hot shoe on the flash and the camera isn't damaged. Have you tried the flash on another camera?
