DC 12v adapters are common and I think that would work. The similar "Powered Partner" speakers used a 14v DC adapter. Just check the size of the plug and the configuration (center pin is +). Radio Shack and other sellers have universal adapters.

SOURCE: Can Acoustic Research wirless speakers be used for surround?

yeah, I looked it up on thier website. Here is what they say.

Warning: This product is designed to work with line level outputs or headphone outputs only.

DO NOT connect it directly to speaker outputs as it will permanently damage the transmitter.

You can use these as surround speakers if you like. You just need a line level surround output on the receiver. Most high end receivers have this feature but, you may only have speaker level outputs.

If that is your case the only option you have is to use a "speaker to line level adapter".... http://www.crutchfield.com/p_543ADP12/Russound-ADP-1-2-Speaker-level-to-Line-level-Adapter.html?tp=9070

Now crutchfield.com is always a little high on prices but if you look around I have seen them around $10 online.

Good luck with your project.

Acoustic Research Model AW871 wireless sterio speakers

Your connection between the AR transmitter and the ONKYO receiver sounds solid. I'd guess it's the wireless speakers that are the wrong point, or at least that's what I'd look at first. Doing a bit of research, I noticed a couple minor points. First, these seem prone to RF interference from other RF devices. Have to tried switching channels on them? Second, someone reported theirs would not work properly unless the speakers were turned on just before the transmitter, and turned off shortly after the transmitter. Apparently you have to hold the button on the front in for 5 seconds to turn the speakers on or off. I know that's rather basic, but it's been a few days and no one else has responded, so I figured we should start somewhere.

They usually use pretty standard audio cords, you can probably just get a replacement at your local Radio Shack. The only one I would be worried about is if you lost the power cord....if that's the case you need to be sure if you buy a different one that the voltage is the same as required.

I have wireless speakers and the transmitter stopped working. Nothing happens when you plug it in--??? It's only a month old. AW872

Hi I also post in here , so that you can let me know how it goes.

Try unplugging the transmitter from power adapter, if it also has batteries remove them. Also unplug transmitter audio cable.

Then remove batteries/unplug adapters from speakers.

Wait few minutes and reconnect the system.

This is a proper hard reset, and can fix minor problems.

If when you re connect the transmitter does not glow, or you do not have sound on one or both channels then there is a fault.

Check the transmitter audio cable, a short in there can cause troubles.

If you find no problems , then unit is defective, as it is under warranty contact Acoustic Research to validate the warranty here and get the transmitter or the whole set replaced.

Wireless speaker won't come on after plugging in now....

Try the adaptor that you know works in the speaker that doesn't. That will eliminate if its the adaptor or the speaker. You will need a multimeter to check if its the on /off switch or not. A quick alternative is to "bridge" out the on / off switch wiring. (Use a piece of wire to join the wires going through the switch together.)
