Yardman 38" 7160 deck belt is too loose I have followed the picture on the diagram... It is the correct size belt for the model but it is still too loose.... Does it matter where you put it on first...???? I started on the left cutting pulley over to the middle pulley beside idler, then on to idler and finished on driving pulley.... yet it is still too loose....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! changing that belt is a chore. It's really hard to analize what's going on but are you sure you replaced all the idler springs? Cuz that can cause a loose belt where you won't be able to move.

Just a thought..was a MTD Rep for 27 years retired 15 years ago.

First is to check the belt diagram and make sure your belt is on the correct side of the engagement pulley. This would be the one on the left side of deck with a spring attached.

You need to know your model number to choose from the list or the year to figure out which one you need. If you are missing the manual, for the said model,
I have found that the simplest way, of figuring out the correct route for the belt, is to remove the deck, and hold the replacement belt above the mechanism, with the tension from the engine end.
Then 'mock up' the replacing proceedure, bearing in mind the correct direction the tensioner/s, move in.
Then it's not too difficult to figure it out the correct route.

go to partstree.com click mtd,then put in your model#;then click deck assembly. it will show you your belt routing;then scroll or click the item #.it should tell you the lenth of your belt.hope this helps.please rate this;thank;s
