you wont see those files in windows explorer you need iTunes if you had to reinstall itune your pc in no longer authorized to view the contents of the ipod

your auxilury sounds like it is set to mono or s/w check your settings!!!!

Follow this link how to reset ipod

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

You can not do it directly in the iPod. You have to use iTunes for deleting them.

Imported photos can be deleted from the iPod disk while it is attached to a Computer.

Connect the iPod to a Computer.

When the iPod icon appears in the iTunes Source list, select it.

If the Summary pane isn't showing, click the Summary tab.

Click "Enable disk use".

All imported photos are located in the "DCIM" folder on the iPod disk.

Delete the images which you want.

Plug your ipod to your pc or mac which ever you are using iTunes should come on if it is installed it will do the firmware update automaticly. internet connection needed for this process

u need to chek in device manager is that yaeelow icon show on immaging device and also try to reinstall drvier thru update drivers...

Click on FREE DOWNLOAD and wait for the 30 second countdown then click on the big blue Download link that will appear. The file should start downloading. FYI... The filename only shows Ultima 2000 but it also contains the 1236 drivers as well. I renamed the file and forgot to put 1236 in there so don't worry.
