Poss. convergence problem with Hitachi 53UDX10B Ultravision

I have a Hitachi 53UDX10B Ultravision Digitial. Earlier today, the color suddenly changed - the images appear misaligned (one on top of the other, slightly off), and it looks as if I'm watching a 3D movie without the glasses on. I suspect that one of the bulbs needs to be replaced, but I'm not sure how to do that. I've removed the front screen, but I cannot see any bulbs.

On our screen the green color looks like it is melting down from the top of the screen and is off from the rest of the picture. Magic Focus does not work and in fact stops before finished. Can this be fixed in-home? When calling around about repairs a couple of repair people said no and one said yes. I don't want to pay for someone to come out to give a repair estimate only to be told that it will have to go to the shop after all.

Thanks, electroman2. I saw that mentioned as a possibility elsewhere. Didn't even know about the magic focus (I don't have the manual, and the TV is secondhand). Just gave it a shot, though, to no avail.

Thanks, ecollier. I'm trying to track down the original remote, although it does seem likely this is a convergence issue. Thanks for the links and help.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

        Screen looks 3D
          Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
              Screen is bowed or warped.

    Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

    Solution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

    Solution #2

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

You have convergence problem. Either bad connections on ics, ics are bad or voltages to convergence circuit are missing. There are no bulbs in this set. 3 picture tubes, red, green and blue produce a picture than when alighned(converged) correctly on top of each other gives you a color picture. When not you get the effect you are describing. Frst you can try the magic focus in the menu.

Hitachi ultravision rear progection converge

If the convergence is so far out that you cannot adjust with your customer access menu then You will probably need the convergence ICs replaced & possibly a fuse or resistor or 2. Then a complete convergence will be necessary & I HIGHLY recommend having a professional technician perform this task.

Hitachi projection 53" screen color off

Since this is a CRT based projection set, there is no "lamp" involved. Does the picture look like 3-D? If so, the problem is likely to be a convergence problem. There should be 1 or 2 convergence ICs marked STK392-110 inside attached to a heatsink. If you can solder, try resoldering the pins on those ICs. If that fails to resolve the problem, replace them.

Keep us posted.
