When using an even number of slots, you can set the ram in a dual-channel config. Generally, 4 slots means slots 1 and 3 are a pair and 2 and 4 are a pair. The machine will automatically look for these pairs first, and they're going to be faster. If you have 4 ram chips, it won't matter, so long as you (if you're using different ram) pair like chips together, ie, if you have 2 pc4200 and 2 pc5200, 1 and 3 should have the 5200 and 2 and 4 the 4200.
They are pairs for dual channel memory usage.
