No magenta printing out

Hi all I have an HP color LaserJet 2600n and it does not print any magenta, i have tried swaping out every cartridge, replacing the transfer belt, checking and cleaning the whole printer several times i even managed to get a service manual, anyone have a suggestion on how i can fix this? oh and yes i am using genuine HP supplies, the printer is over 2 years old and was printing just fine up to a month ago.

hi i m facing the same problem w celdiricks too... no magenta printing out n not even a single trace of magenta toner on the page... hv try changing 3 original cartridges but problem still persist... n i dun think is the laser scanner fault... or mayb the problem lies on the shaft gear timing problem???

My HP Color LaserJet 2605dn prints pictures with a green cast/tint and appears washed out. Changing the magenta cartridge did not solve the problem (the printer said all the ink cartridges had several hundred pages to go). I update the firmware to the very latest; and slid the cleaning bar back & forth (its the little blue tab just above the installed black ink cartridge).

Following the suggestions above I have just resolved this problem. My exact problem was that the Magenta colour was printing out at different densities across the page - from faint at either side to solid in the middle.
The procedure I followed was to dismantle the printer until I could get at the laser/scanner unit, take that out, and take the top off. I discovered that the mirror for the magenta toner was very dusty so I cleaned it with a cotton bud (dry, no water or solvent for fear of damaging the surface coating of the mirror), taking the opportunity to clean all the others at the same time.
After reassembling, the printer is now perfect again. I did not perform any resets or recalibrations following this operation.
Some comments:
1. Disassembling is a fairly complex job, involving disconnecting most of the loom from the back PCBs. You need to do this to be able to remove the rear internal panel so that you can get at the laser/scanner assembly. Don't worry too much. though, because all the plugs are different sizes so it should be fairly straightforward reassembling it all. It worked out fine for me!
2. The bottom screw for the laser/scanner assembly (in my case, although there are actually holes for two screws) is located behind two thin metal panels which spring out from the bottom of the printer body, just above the paper tray.
3. I think there is a bit of a design flaw in these printers (if it's fair to describe it as such). Two of the mirrors (magenta and yellow) are angled upwards so that dust can collect on them, while the other two are angled down. Of the two that are angled up, the Magenta one is at the bottom and is most likely to collect dust. The laser/scanner assembly is not sealed so it is easy for dust to get into it. Furthermore there is a fan alongside the bottom mirror so there will be more dust in the air in this area. It would not surprise me if this is a fairly common problem for these printers after a certain amount of use.

Cleaned mirrors as described above and now my laserjet is printing perfectly again. Thanks so much for the tip!

  • duncanelsey Jan 12, 2011

This works - we had the same problem and this fixed it. The dissassembly is fiddly - you need to remove the top, both side panels and un-loom all th e wiring in the back, but take your time and you will get there!

Thanks! It fixed it for me, too. My photos now print beautifully, just like the day I bought the LaserJet printer.

I have gone to the trouble to lay out each step of the process, along with photos, to help others: see my website for this.

Hi Andrew RH, I am facing the exact problem you are describing. I tried the website you mentioned for the pictures, it doesn't seem to work. Is there somewhere else to see these fotos? Thanks...

Although there are a lot of screws, you will have to open it again, take all the parts out and put them back, but make sure you will do it turning all the screws tight, also, and most important, do not do this with the cartridges in the printer.
also, when you finish, set the printer to clean itself, it will ask you to insert cartridges, open hatch, clean the printing film, insert cartridges and it is all done, also, please calibrate it!!!!

My Color Laserjet 2600n was having this problem. I phoned HP (UK) and they're replacing the printer even though it's two years out of warranty.

The solution here looks like a good one but it's worth seeing if HP can help you first I think.

I just got off the phone with HP customer no-service and they said that since my printer is out of warranty (1.5 years old) that I could either pay for an express exchange of $279+tax for a refurb or buy a new one for $374. Thanks to this list now I may have a chance to get my printer fixed after just buying all new printer cartridges that set me back almost $400. Can anyone provide detailed instructions and/or pictures on how to disassemble the printer? Thank you in advance!

Fixed it for me! Thanks a million. Use an air duster to clean the optics and reset the printer to default settings once all reassembled, which will force a recalibration. Make sure the optical unit is properly seated before replacing all the boards and wires at the back though. (I didn't, and had to take the whole lot out again to pop it into place properly!) Dust on the lenses and mirrors will cause this problem. You will need to remove both sides and the back plate to get at the optics box. Try cleaning all of the laser optical path.

I took my printer apart and cleaned the mirrors. However, after putting it back together my pages are printing out with magenta toner all over the background. Does anyone know what I did wrong.

SOURCE: HP Color LaserJet 2605dtn won't print magenta at all.

I just encountered this problem with my 2600n purchased in June2008. I'm not very mechanical and had no difficulty following the instructions providing in the link above (Feb 04, 2009) and solving the problem on my own. I have printed well over 10,000 pages on this printer and it ran like a dream until the dusty mirrors interfered with color quality. Now its back to usual top-notch quality and I'm thrilled. Thanks for the posting of service instructions for a quick DIY and saving me the expense of servicing, recycling and/or purchasing a new unit.

Every page covered in magenta and black won't print across the page

This is caused by toner contamination in the laser scanner unit, it is quite a complex job removing and cleaning the laser scanner. I would suggest you contact HP regarding the repair.

Magenta backgrounding

If the magenta is low the waste bin may be full and that may be causing the problem. If this is the case you need to change the toner. You can try calibrating the printer. You may have to do this 3 times in a row for it to make a difference.
Press Select-check mark button
Use arrows to go to Print Quality

Black blocked by magenta

One ovbious option would be to have a friend print it out.
I assume that is not an option.

Some printers just won't let you print if a single color is out. Yes, stupid. Try printing a blank page. If it fails, there is no other option but to replace the cartridge or print elsewhere.
If the blank page test works, this next option/test is worth a try...
Depending on the app you are using, you can specify the color breakdown of the colors you are using. In your case, it is possible that the text is set to a rich black (4-color) rather than just black.
If that is the case, to test this most quickly, make a new file, and create a new black (black2), set to 100 black, 0% other colors.
Type a wor and set it to print in that color and try to print it.
If that works, apply the same technique to your real document.
Hope it works. I've been stuck in the same situation, and some printers will just not let you print if a single color is out.
Good luck.
